In my club house, behind the bar is a decanter, so if anyone hits a hole in one they pay to fill it up with whiskey and anyone can have a drink when in the club house.

Now today while playing with my mate the chap in front started shouting and jumping up and down when standing on the green. We went over to see him picking the ball out of the cup for a hole-in-one (he was playing on his own but knowing him well if he said it was I fully believe him) so hand shakes all round and told him we will meet him for a drink later.

When we got back he got a drink in then told us they (the club) would not take his word and said he couldn't fill the decanter as no one saw it, plus he could not have his name on the board in the club house.

He has been a member for over 26 yrs and I think he has been badly treated, and like he said who will believe him now his name is not on the board.

So was wondering if your club will only count one if playing with others and would you count it or just keep it to yourself. Myself I would shout in form the tree tops, but the way I play it will be a long time before I get one.

At Crowborough you would only get your name on the "aces" board if it was scored in club competition.
Don't know if it's the same at all clubs.
Harsh I know, but it avoids cheating (not saying this guy would, but it wouldn't be the same with everybody)
:D :D :D

Our club only takes aces in competitive play for the name on the board right, therefore there's always one witness (the scorer)at least.

Not sure about the bar aspect. as an aside, i aced at our captains day (210 yard, 3 iron by the way..ha ha) but i dont carry much cash or a wallet up there so the previous years captain (playing partner for the round) bought ME a drink, the legend.

I actually didnt even see it drop as its a bit of a blind green - huge disapointment that bit!

Been behind 2 holes in one, no board in the clubhouse but you do get a mention in the local rag.
If you only seen it going in the hole no-one knows if he took 3 off the tee. not saying he did but no-one to say otherwise.

Churlish to say the least. I'm relatively new to this game but I thought it was all about honour and fair play. (you would rather cheat on your wife than cheat at golf etc. etc.) so if you say you've aced one that should be enough said, the decanter filled, everyone at the club should enjoy this Guy's golfing career highlight!

not being churlish in the least, simply pointing out that there may be doubters in the clubhouse. If I evr get one I can bet it will be with no witnesses. not degrading the guy, only saying why it may not be recognised.

They did the right thing. I'm sure that the fella is honest but if they took everyone on their word some people would exploit it. Same reason you dont go out as a single in a medal you need witnesses.

Same as most others, we have a board for competitions only. I've not heard of anyone at my club coming in and claiming a hole in one on their own so not sure what would happen. I think if I was on my own I'd be tempted to keep my mouth shut and avoid the bar tab.

AGREED!

Homer, on a side note, great blog. Can you put me down for 60 lost balls? for some reason i'm struggling to post it on your page.
