Would this make a good combi set??

At the moment I play Titleist AP2's with project X 5.5.

I also have a set of 690mb's with S300 shafts in that I have been hitting down the range and got one or two rounds in with before the snow fell. Love the feel and look of them.

What I was thinking is having the 690mb's (7,8,9,W) re-shafted with project X 5.5 so they match the AP's as i prefer the lighter shaft.

I would then game AP2's (3,4,5,6) and 690mb's (7,8,9,W)
all with matching shafts, grips and lie.

Question is, would this make a good combo set or are the heads too disimilar. i.e would a cb/mb combo be much better???

No reason why not....titlist ZB, goes from cavity to blade. I would check the distance gap from the 6 to the 7 and there is a fair difference between S300 to the 5.5s. I would get one long iron changed, and try that first.

A CB/MB probably looks better matched but there are pros with odd mismatched sets, so if the AP2/MB mixed set suits your needs best, go for it.

I would wonder about the economics of reshafting the MBs, though. PX is not the cheapest shaft, and you will need them professionally fitted and regripped, and by the time you do that, you could have sunk a lot of money in them, all for a slightly lighter feel? There is an argument that a heavier shaft is preferable in shorter clubs anyway. The PX is a firmer shaft than S300, but only slightly, and it is probably less of a problem in shorter clubs.

I would be tempted to mix the sets as are.

Would there not be a weird step at the change over. I assume the 690s will have a more penetrating flight than the AP2s, being bladed, but the PX shafts might be longer. Would this not make the 6 and 7 the same club almost?

One of the apparent issues with mixing the CB/MB sets is the lofts. The old (going back a while) titleist sets used to have slightly differing lofts between the bladed sets and the cavities to account for the different flght characteristics so you could do this. The new ones have the same lofts, and so may need adjusting.

The ZBs are designed as a blended set.

I would try them for a few rounds as they are.
The DG shaft puts a bit more spin on and is suited to the shorted irons.

I had a similar set up before May this year. Mizuno Pro2 2 iron, 4-6. Then Wilson FG-49 blades 7-9. Then Mizuno Black Ox 48, 52, 56 and 60. The Mizuno 2 iron had a Nippon shaft, the other Mizunos had PX shafts, the Wilsons had DG Black Gold shafts and the wedges were DG.

You can change the lofts easy enough on the MBs to get them to fit nicely into a set.

There isn't a huge amount, but S300 is about 5.3 on the PX scale, and about 5.7 on the standard Rifle scale. But it feels and flights the ball a bit differently, so individual preferences will vary. Some people find PX very boardy, in fact it was designed to be so.

Holy Moly... so, looks like you could probably pick up a set of PX shafts for £150-180 online, so lets say roughly £25 per shaft, they want £55 labour\parts to take out an old shaft and pop in a new one. Are they serious?

Granted, they may not be able to get hold of single shafts, but still, even if they paid £180 for a full set they'd be charging £140 to change 4 shafts. Wow!!!
