Was supposed to play this morning, but it's blowing a gale (currently 53 mph), chucking down with rain, mixed with snow flurries, 2 degrees, but feels like minus 5 according to the met office.

Think I will give it a miss this morning, and hope it clears up this afternoon - it is supposed to do so, and to reach the giddy heights of 3 degrees (feel like factor -3), winds 20-30mph.

Was wondering what's the worst conditions folk have intentionally went out in?

I'll often go out if it's raining but it depends on whether it's forecast to ease up or get worse.

The worst conditions? We played our Winter League a few weeks ago in the most ridiculous gale I have ever played in. Our course is exposed so when the wind blows we know about it, but that day we had gusts of over 60mph.

I hit 4 iron into a par 3 I would normally take no more than a 9, and absolutely pured it. It set off towards the green and I watched as it started to get bigger and bigger as it started its arc back towards the tee. It travelled about 250 yards in total there and back and landed about 20 yards ahead of me.

Absolutely ludicrous - we should never have played in it.

I played (and gave up after 9 holes) at Ballyliffin a few years back, the wind & rain were so strong you could barely see or indeed stand up.

We retreated to the clubhouse to watch the FA Cup final with about 200 others, I luckily won the sweep for the time of the first goal, however decided to leave the money behind the bar as we were having such a good time.

2nd Jan maybe 6 or 7 years ago
Playing Braid Hills in Edinburgh, the final hole is a bit crazy golf designed to see if you need to see the Dr rather than test your skill as a golfer a reachable par 4 but with an almost vertical ridge in front of the green maybe 30 feet high. The whole hole slopes up steeply and the prevailing wind is right in your face. ON A SUNNY day its windy as hell and you are knackered

Played it, strong snow, hail, ripping wind, it was minus 2 at the time, with win chill coming over that ridge probably minus 10.. be more pleasant sleeping in a box freezer.. put me off winter golf, never played in crap weather since.. Just typing this makes me cold

Played winter pairs last year in an absolute storm. The course was horrific, the rain was coming down like I've never seen. 9 holes in a bloke from the bar came out and said "the course is closed, your match is cancelled". Woops! We were 3 up at the turn too!

12 Hardy souls of here played Aberdovey Last Winter think it was Feb. It hosed it down from the 2nd hole, that combined with wind and being about 3*c made it pretty Rough going.

I don't think any of us finished the round and I was pretty ecstatic when we walked in at about the 15th.

We had a great day out there the day before though!

St Anne's Old Links a few years ago. It was raining when we started and a storm came in. By the time we reached the 9th, that green was totally flooded. One of the group walked in and left three of us to complete. Couldn't reach the green 16th with any club. 17th and 18th fairways were rivers. One the best 34 points I've ever had! :)

Two extremes.

Couple of years back at Chesfield Downs. 40mph winds and torrential rain. Everyone else stayed in the clubhouse but 3 of us ventured out. Got 4 holes in a quit. Wind was blowing bags and trolleys over, rain seemed to be going upwards at times.

The other end of the scale was in Scottsdale about 3 years ago. Height of summer and they had a heatwave. 111 Fahrenheit and even with a buggy I was exhausted after 18.

Down the Falklands - played in 60 mph winds with wedge shots ending up behind you - great fun

Probably at my home course in a driving sleet and hail storm. Umbrellas were being wrecked, trolleys were being blown over, and the hail stones were literally hurting our faces. We gave up after only two holes!

Gusting winds are normal but on a links course with 25-45mph wind and hail decided to come out and play. Might have a pic somewhere.

edit:
Quick clip I had recorded. Long sleeves came out for 40 minutes, it was like getting hit with bb gun pellets.

Less than an hour later..

Played during very high winds at my home club. was putting out on the 10th when there was a very load crack and a 50ft pine came down missing me by about 10 feet.....But the worst I've played in was at the Oxfordshire in December 2014, the day a hurricane hit. It was forecast, but wasn't on us when we started. We started out and by 9 holes it was blowing a gale. Electric trolleys were being blown over or blown away....literallly, the rain was like being hit by nails, and when we got to 13 and had to start hitting back into the wind it just became impossible. There were only two other groups out there alongside us, and we all took the decision to walk in at that point as it was impossible to play.

Last winter after a very heavy freeze. Called ahead and was shocked to hear the course was still open, it was. Turned up and it was still well below freezing. Tees needed a hammer drill to get a tee in the ground, fairways were frozen solid and the greens were like trying to putt across a bed of nails.

Played one par 3 from an elevated tee box, managed to hit the green only to see it cannon off onto the next fairway!

Played my home club one winter afternoon on a bet from the General Manager that I couldn't break 85 in the conditions which were horrendous. Had to hole out everywhere and play off the tips - par was 72. Did it by holing a five foot putt when I could hardly stand up in the wind. And all I won was a cup of coffee off him. OK the bragging rights remain to this day but it was chucking it down, blowing a Miss Hoolie and the temperature was colder than a stripper at a nun's convention.

We played Donnington Grove in march 2014 as we had a golf weekend booked. Had a phonecall on the saturday morning to say the course was closed due to snow but if we didnt turn up we would not be given the voucher to return. We played a local course in Bristol on the saturday and after 6 holes the sleet/snow started so we finished off and headed for Newbury for the night absolutely freezing and soaked through. Woke up on the sunday to be told the front 9 was playable. So played it twice in about -2/3 conditions. Fairplay they gave us 2 free rounds that we played in May in beautiful weather. To be honest il give most conditions a go :D

Worst was Lydd links - beautiful dry sunny day until the 14th and then the fog set in suddenly and couldn't see more than 30 yards in front.
