Working out your exact handicap

Just when I thought I'd got the new WHS system sussed I now think I maybe have'nt.
I've been through all my friends handicaps [ 7 of them ], and if I add the 8 best score differentials up and divide by 8 I get their exact handicap which is how I thought it worked. Why then does it not work for me, am I missing something?
When I do the same calculation with my differential numbers I get 18.8 but my EG app says 18.2. It changed last night after a good score dropped off yesterday.
My best 8 are: 21.6, 18.2, 16.3, 20.1, 20.4, 22.5, 12.2, 19.1. WHS Index 18.2

Not sure, I've gone up a couple of shots in the last few months but no more than 3. How can you tell?

Have you got 20 scores on your record?

If not it works like this

Also the caps work on a rolling one year basis and not the current year.

Yes I have hundreds of scores on my record. Before I have always been able to work out what my handicap would be when the last one dropped off and I was expecting to be playing off 19 in the stableford tomorrow but still 18. Not a problem but just couldn't work out why.

I suspect this is due to your 12.2 score would be defined an exceptional score and so the handicap would drop by 1.

To clarify bunker finder an exceptional score is 7 or more shots less the handicap it was for the card submitted.
