working in the golf industry.

cheers for the responses guys, it wasnt actually tour bus work i was thinking of, more along the lines of repping for say a clothing brand , or an accessories company.....
 
I’d love to be in a golf job too, God knows what as I am a type designer by trade :rofl:

I could design logos or something :-)
 
I work in the industry and have done for nearly 4 years.For the last 2 And a half as a Club Manager and since starting as a CM has my love of the game gone downhill? No,I still love the game with a passion but what I have found is that I am playing a lot less now as sometimes I want to just chill at home as spending 5 days a week and 50 plus hours a week at a club can take away the want to spend another 4 hours at a golf club.

I have also found that I have become less and less competitive preferring to have a relaxed knock about with my good friends and of course I still adore our away days/trips together......highlights of the year for me.

It is however a great industry to work in and I wouldn't have it any other way....despite it having it's moment,mostly with members sniping about the smallest and most ridiculous things,not once in my last 4 years have I got up on a Monday morning with the awful thought that I has a weeks work ahead of me before the weekend appears again.

I know what's what as far as clubs go, i can tell someone at 100 paces what cvlubs they should use, and more importantly my own game has comne on immeasurabely, and I've even taken more lessons (2) in the past three months than I've taken in my entire 28 year golfing career.

In a similar vein to Dodger, I work for a Trust that manages and operates the leisure facilities for the local authority. Part of that includes several golf courses that I get the opportunity to play. I think that I can count on one hand the number of times I've played on our courses as by the end of the week I just want to chill out and not get involved in things at one of our venues.

I really do enjoy working in this industry, but, you do find it hard to switch off and be detached at times.
 
Dcb/dodger, thanks for your imput. That was exactly the feedback I expected from people that worked at a club level. I know the current director of golf at my club plays very little which is why I was inclinded to stay away from this area of employment

I rarely play at the club I work at but even at my home club I have played less and less over the last 2 years for the reasons given Oddsocks.

As I say though,I wouldn't have it any other way.:)

Perhaps you could start an online clinic for us? What clubs we should use based on our postings on a forum and our handicaps? I think it would be great to tap into the wealth of knowledge that you have.

You can start with me. I am certainly pig ignorant on new equipment and without question, a know it all. I have no handicap and play about once every 6 weeks. My wedge game is pathetic and I have never bought a new golf club in my life because I prefer second hand prices.

Can you unsheath your broadsword of golfing knowledge and give me some recommendations on what clubs I need to take my game to the next level? Thanks coach!


And Oddsocks, sorry for the slight departure away from the subject in hand. For what it is worth, I have several friends who have had long careers in the golf industry and I think it is fair to say that their interest in playing the game goes in cycles. They are keen for a while then might not pick up a club in anger for months. They have been like that for years but deep down, all still love their golf I think. Not sure if this helps..?
 
Wasn't there an article in GM about a chap that became manager at Worplesdon ? Lovely course that I could happily be a member of, but the manager said he had only played a couple of times in two years despite a lot of offers. Seem to remember he was a fairly low handicapper. Sorry it's a bit vague but my memory is not that great.:(
