Woods out of The Open

As much as I don’t want to say it, I think he’s done. I think he’s had bad advice of late, his swing changes are horrendous and only seem good for short bursts and certainly no good for 72 holes.

For someone with so much talent, to go through all those changes for no apparent reason beats me. Over the years many golfers go through swing changes and the do it to move forward, to win more tournaments, win more majors. Tiger for some reason has done it the opposite way.

IMO If ever a player needs to go back to basics it’s Tiger.

Oh please dont tell me it's the divorce thing, the man has millions and millions and he was servicing umpteen burds while winning majors.

Can't see Tiger being being in contention on Major Sunday anymore.
His body's broken, his swing's in the toilet, his mind's elsewhere and he's getting on a bit too.

His World Ranking is in sharp decline due to his bad form - injured or otherwise. He's not been injured all the time and he still hasn't played well.
If he's going to return he needs, as Tommo says, to go back to basics - and fast.

Wouldn't be surprised if this is his last season.

How much rest does he need? He's had so much rest the last few years he must be almost horizontal lol. As stated before, he needs to fix a lot more than his leg to get back to where he was. i think unfortunately for Tiger, that boat has already sailed.

Being horizontal a lot is a big part of the problem and the outfall it caused.

I think if Tiger does take time out, keeps up with the rehab and practising with a view to a return at the start of next season He could return with a flourish. I also think in the months he is not playing competitively he should concentrate on his public profile and get back to his charity work, and repair the demons.

We all know he has a god given talent, coupled with the practise regime he can maintain there is still a champion for future majors inside, he just needs to find the old motivation, and get back to the passion for the game instead of the routine of being number1. Maybe then he will be able to display the amazing tenacity and skill that he has.

I think it depends on just how bad the knee really is and I don't think we'll ever know the full extent. If he rests for the remainder of the season, can get some serious rehab done on both the injury and his game then he may come back next year. He'll certainly be fresher. Whether he'll still have the hunger and game remains to be seen. I think Jack's record is pretty safe now although I'd love to see him have one big major hurrah

He is pretty much finished as the force in golf he was, he can still turn up and get top tens any time he wants but winning won't be easy.
With regard to Majors he'll have one last hurrah, bit like fat Jack at Augusta 86, that'll be it I think.

Still 15 majors would be a pretty good career!

I think it would be an incredible comeback if he can re-capture his previous form. However, I think his 'aura' has gone and the rest of the field no longer fear him as they once did / seemed to. As for whether it's solely the injury that is keeping him out, I wouldn't be surprised if he is still not fully focussed mentally. It'd be brave to completely write him off but I think he's got his work cut out to re-capture his former glory.

how much of the physical is down to the mental, no matter how many psychiatrists/psychologists he has on tap.

I'm not sure that, right now, he does have the motivation.
It's not just being competitive for four days, it's whether he is still up for the day-to-day grind.

I don't doubt that he will play again, but stick it out when things are going awry . . .?

This thread reminds me of the Luke Donald one when he had his wrist injury. Many on here said that he would not be as good and never be back to his best.......... I'll say no more about that.

Does anybody read what Tiger has actually said, and does nobody believe his reasons for not playing in the Open?
He's had just a few injuries and most definitely played through and aggravated those injuries, when he should have got back to full fitness first.

I for one think he'll be back stronger and with plenty of hunger to get even more Majors.
Whether he surpasses Jack Nicklaus's record of Major wins remains to be seen, but I reckon he'll give it a good go.

Golfmmad.

personally think he,s going to comeback stronger if the injury allows, i wouldnt be to quick to write him off just yet,he,s shown glimpses of the old tiger, the final day of the ryder cup he played superb. " beware the wounded animal"

He will be back and stronger than ever, cannot believe how quickly folk are dismissing him.

But I for one would hope that whilst he is bringing his swing and thought process back in line that he will spend a little time trying to break his spitting habit.

Cheers

100% agree doc,as if he,s just going to lose his swing :D he knows why he had to make the changes and he knows it,s not a quick fix, there will be a few more majors with tigers name on them yet

Interesting thread.... could we be overlooking just one small item ? Maybe his knee ligament problem is taking more time to get back to normal than his docs expected ? Add to that an achilles problem ;)

I know some of what he is going through, in fact Tiger heard about my problems and thought he'd try it out himself. I managed to sprain my MCL back in March, tried unsuccessfully to rehabilitate my knee and ended up, after three comebacks to the golf course, having to take an enforced rest on medical advice. I know how much strain my own gentle flowing swing has been putting on my knee, and hate to think what Tigers swing would do to his knee.

I'm two weeks into an enforced layoff, been for both medical advice and physio, bottom line is I've just got to give the knee time to heal and then do the necessary work to rehab the knee.

Tigers biggest problems will be the demons in his head. He'll worry about his knee and he'll now worry that the rest of the field aren't scared of him any more.

The way his ranking is going will he even get an invitation to play?
I believe winning all four majors gets him automatic invites back to just about every tournament for 10 years or so.
Just look at the events Michael Campbell still gets to play.

Just remember his divorce settlement will be made in relation to his earnings and any final settlement MUST be considered against a rising curve of income or indeed, as in his case, a big downward curve and a question mark over any future on course income.

Tiger is possibly making more future dough for himself by not playing, rather than by winning lots and giving his dear lady wife multi-millions more!

Divorce settlement agreed ... look out for a Tiger return ... as a winner ..up to Rory and Co!

Former Open champions are currently exempt from qualifying until they reach 60. If they keep that rule he'll be able to play until 2035.
