Morning gents

Im playing a comp at Woodhall Spa in early September, has anyone played it and what's it like? Ive read that it is voted the best inland course in the UK which is quite a claim!

Cheers

Edge

Not played there but I have a trip organised for April next year with some other forumers and really looking forward to it. I hear that it is quite tight with plenty (plenty) of bunkers.
Bobmac has played it quite a few times. I think he'll be able to fill you in.

Definitely the best inland course I have played! Your long game must be on form, so that you avoid the huge bunkers and expanses of heather, your irons must be pin point accurate to avoid the green side bunkers which are up to 12ft deep (front left on the 12th) and then you must be confident in your bunker play just in case!

But it is picturesque too as well as brutal! [image]www.todaysgolfer.co.uk/upload/4826/images/woodhallspa5.jpg[/image]

I have played it once a couple of years ago. Fantastic course, very, very deep bunkers which actually make you play your shot better. Greens were very true when I played, if you miss the putt it is down to you and not some pitch mark.
You ned to be accurate with the irons (something I was not). I also found the club staff and members to be very friendly.

I am sure you will have a cracking time, the range is spot on as well with decent quality balls for you to use.

Enjoy

Midnight...

So far this is the best course I have ever played. Loved it.

The holes get better looking as you go round, and after a few holes you won't believe this is possible.

If you want to card a score, avoid the bunkers.

If you are off the back tees, some of the carry to make the fairway is tough. No 4 irons off the tee for saftey, unless you like being in heather.

Yea, it's alright. ;)

No, but seriously, it will be one of (if not THE) best golf course you'll ever play (The Hotchkin, that is. The Bracken is very good as well, but not in the league of The Hotchkin) As has been said above, it's tight, there's lots of bunkers and if you're in the heather, good luck with getting out without a broken wrist :D...But, if you're good with your putter, the greens are true and not that undulating, so you you can definitely make up some shots if you're having a nightmare tee-to-green.

As an ex-resident of the village, if you have the chance, take a wander into the village and sample the local life. It's very laid back and mostly populated by elderly folk (it's nick-named God's waiting room), but it's a very quaint village with some cracking little shops and places to eat and grab a beer.

If you're looking for accommodation, I can highly recommend the Dower House Hotel (www.dowerhousehotel.co.uk). It's a 9 bedroom country house hotel that is situated on the Hotchkin estate over looking the 1st hole on The Bracken. Aside from the fact it's run by my Parents, I can honestly say it's the best hotel in the village by a long way and is perfectly located for Golfers (the clubhouse is a 2 minute walk up the private road that the hotel is on and the driving range is a 5 minute walk) and they do an absolutely blinding Sunday Lunch....ok, enough of my shameless plugging :D...

In short, you will not come away disappointed, it's an incredible golf course.

Previous post sums it up very well.

but the Hotckin is a very fair course. If you play well you will score well which is not always the case on some of the other top courses.

The bracken course would be held in a much higher regard if it was not in the shadow of its bigger brother.

I enjoyed it equally as much but they are very different type of courses.

Very good points actually.

The Bracken, on it's own would be considered a very, very high quality club course (as that it what it is), but because it lives in the shadow of "the old course", it's sometimes cast aside. I always used to recommend people coming to stay/play that they play both courses as each offers a completely different test of golf. I love them both and wish I could play them more often. I'm heading back to Woodhall this weekend, but unless I can find one of the guys I used to play with, I really can't afford to pay £60+ for a round. :(

It is quality. If you can play anywhere near your handicap especially on the Hotchkin then you are playing good golf. A great test of golf but also very fair. Definitely a course you need to think your way round. Some of the bunkers are scary though. If I lived closer it would be a regular for me.

Aztec, is the "Get Stuffed" steak house still there? (on the road to Coningsby).....best steak I've ever eaten.

I'm afraid to say it isn't. IT was shut down 7 years ago by the EHO because their hygiene....well...let's just say they didn't have any! I think rats were involved too. Sorry!

Also, if that's the best steak you've ever eaten, I really suggest you get out more ;) Their steaks were awful and I can name at least 4 restaurants within 5 miles of that place that serve much better quality steaks!

Fear not though, there are plenty of good eateries in the area now. If anyone needs any recommendations if they're going, just let me know.

Anywhere that serves up a nice 28oz T Bone????
Best steak I ever had was at a restaurant in Pitlochry. 28oz T with all the trimmings. Went back the following year and he didn't have any 28 ouncers, only 16's. And he wouldn't do 2 x 16's for the same price as a 28 even taking the fact that there would be more bone in them. Git.

Not off the top of my head, but there are *alot* of local butchers in the area who would probably be able to supply their customers (i.e. the local restaurants) given notice.

If you're serious and you fellas are interested in eating out when you're there, I can speak to my parents and see if they can get 28oz T's from the butcher they use. I don't foresee it being a problem as long as they can supply them and you're happy paying for it. My mum is usually happy to accommodate any "unusual" request.

If that doesn't float you're boat, but you're planning on eating out, call whatever restaurant you've booked with ahead of time and ask the question. Most good restaurants in the area get their meat from local butchers who should be able to get in 28oz (with notice.)

I know what you mean though. You really cannot beat a 28oz T-Bone, rare with a buttered jacket spud and pan fried spinach. But they're rarer than rocking horse do-do. :(
