I have had a small bespoke desk top made from a beautiful piece of cherry wood. I deliberately had it left sanded but not finished so I could do the last parts myself. I have taken advice from the guy who made it for me as to how to finish it (hand sanded with 180 grade, finished with hard wax oil).

I'm betting there will be some wood nerds on here - any other hints, tips or advice?

So I'm not really sure the question you are asking here. Finishing wood and polishing wood are two totally different things. You can't polish unfinished wood, that would be a disaster, especially on a wood like cherry.

What is it you are trying to achieve with the wood?
