Wood grip vs iron grip

I suspect I am going to be advised that how I play is pretty wrong but I've always done this as I find it more natural to me.

For all my irons I use an overlapping grip. For my woods I use a baseball grip.

Should I really try to use the same grip for both?

As a generalization the best part of my game is the woods off the tee and hitting the shorter irons, it's the longer iron's and particularly fairway woods that are the most inconsistent. I am wondering if my baseball grip on the fairway woods is making top them so regularly as I might be scooping them like I tend to do from the tee.

Anyone else do the same as me?

I would suspect that you'll be on your own with different grips....I have one grip for everything (except putting obviously!)

Nope, I'm with the OP....for all my irons I use an interlocking grip, quite neutral. For my driver and woods I have a very open right hand...... and for the 3rd consecutive week my driving was probably the best part of my game.

I'd hesitate to use "feeling natural" as a reason for part of your swing.

i play with several very very mediocre golfers who i suspect would probably say they feel natural hitting it the way they do.

the percentage of top golfers who use a baseball grip / (or different grips for different full swing clubs) is very low / (almost non existent). ask yourself if there is a reason for that?

what feels "natural" can change within a few weeks of regular trips to the driving range. the biggest improvement i ever made in the shortest period of time is when a pro spent some time with me giving me a more reliable / conventional / neutral grip. it felt weird to begin with, but it's natural now.

I have never used both at the same time however I have recently changed from a baseball grip to a over lap. I am yet to play in a competition however I have seen an improvement in my game (after a slight dip) since changing.

I'm off to the range Thursday so I think I might have a go at hitting the woods off the grass with the overlapping grip and see what happens. Thinking about it now I'm a bit surprised I've never really tried it before. Must be joining a new club and playing more often than ever and caring about getting better I suppose.

i'm the same as you using baseball grip for my woods, but use interlocking for my irons and wedges, then use an overlap for my putter.

Find that with the woods it helps me to square the club face at impact more, not entirely sure why.

Having said that, my driving has been very hit and miss lately so maybe I need a change.

I use a baseball grip :mmm:

Convention would say use the same grip for all clubs (putter excepted) but if it works for you then there are no rules against it.

I also use a baseball grip, lets me grip the club more securely without feeling I'm gripping too tightly.

I think I do it because I feel I can swing harder and squarer when looking for distance.

The range will be interesting this week. I think I would feel more out of control using the baseball grip on irons - it's all a bit weird :)

Pretty much every pro golfer has a different swing/grip. It doesnt matter what you use. If it works then go ahead.

pretty much no pro golfers use a baseball grip. there must be a reason for this other than coincidence.

my point is, however, that going by what "feels" comfortable isn't a great approach. as what "feels" comfortable can generally be changed over the course of a few weeks. and in the case of a golfer who has been playing for a long time is just a long ingrained bad habit that "feels" comfortable.

I recon my driver grip is a little stronger but is the same style.

I cant find anything on it now but I thought Tiger used the 10 finger or baseball grip with his wedges in the past...
