Won my first board comp yesterday, my name will now be in gold letters and a part of club history for everyone to see in years to come :o

The Corbett Cup originates from 1906 and is hard fought for every year in a Greensome Medal format with drawn partners.

I was drawn with a 79yr old 15 handicapper who was as solid as a rock, as I nailed my drives finding the fairways for fun with my new SLDR, he was left with short irons putting me on the green and we were parring most holes with a degree of comfort, some of the birdie putts were just escaping us and at times were very frustrating, but we slid some in for good measure a little later.

The hooter brought us all off after we had played 11 holes (we started on the 18th) due to lightening so I had a couple of pints believing we wouldn't be going back out, but suddenly after around 90 minutes watching The Open, we were informed the comp would restart!

A double bogey ensued on the 1st hole (11th) after the restart as we both struggling to get loose again but an immediate birdie on 12 got the focus and juices going again.

Not fully sure of how the calculations are worked out but we won with a very healthy nett 61.2, almost 10 under and very clear winners

I really didn't feel that well prepared for this comp due to playing 36 holes at Cooden 180 miles away the day before and driving the 3.5hrs back afterwards getting home at around 1am! But even though I felt I was running on fumes at times, my senior partner and I really gelled and dovetailed perfectly off each other when we had to.

I've won a couple of medals and the Rabbits Chalice specifically for 18+ handicappers a couple of years ago, but this is my 1st club major, so to speak.

Really chuffed :whoo:

So you needed help from a 79 year old to win a comp ;) - you must have been the oldest team in the comp

Well done Robin - always a good feeling to get a win on a comp where you will see your name on the board. Sounds like you played some cracking golf :whoo:

Thanks everyone

Nice on Robin. How's it going at Nth Warwicks?

I'm enjoying it but its tough as the grass & straw is up making the fairways very narrow and the gorse is rampant so its very different to Kenilworth, far less forgiving, get your backside over for a round, invite another 2 to make a 4-ball up.

Well done matey.

36 at Cooden in the company of 2 oldies the day before was obviously the best preparation you could have.

It seems that those tips we gave you worked ......

Cheers Roger, I reckon the beer back here is less gassy fart-smiley.gif

You obviously thrive in the company of old gits!

Well done Robin, but let's be fair you were whacking it much better than your handicap on Friday and a win, as well as a cut, looked overdue!!

I'm chuffed for you mate!
