Won but why feel disappointed

Played yesterday in an 18 hole stableford and won my div and overall comp with 31 points. My driving was poor very poor
( changed shaft so will have to look at that ) the weather was of biblical proportions at times and putting in the wind was " toss of a coin" putting. I putted up hill and the ball went 12 ft past the hole being blown up hill from a 20 ft putt. I went sloppy missing a putt from 8" trying to be clever. Hit some real slack shots. Shot four triple bogeys but five pars of which two I have never parred in comp before.
only shot 31 points and not dropped .1.
chuffed ave won but it feels a bit Hollow ?
Why, is it high expectation ? Flippin game.

Na I'd feel the same. In conditions like that where you're battling and not feeling in control a good result - in relative terms - can feel as you say, hollow.

Here's the positive, it was reductions only, you won, had you been matchplaying you wouldve beaten anyone in your division, next time you step on the 1st tee in a howler you know you can still go out and score. Will your oppo? Or will he think "sod this I can't play/hate playing in the rain".

Perhaps you would normally associate winning a comp with shooting under your handicap, and playing really well. Which, is usually the case, especially in summer months nett in the mid to low 60s is not uncommon.

Like you said the weather plays a massive part in this, you didn't play your best but still won. Great achievement. You won in those conditions. Even better. You played better than anybody else, and coped with the conditions better than anyone else did on the day, and you still could've done better in your eyes - that's great!

Sounds like perspective is needed I would say! Congrats:thup:

For me, playing well brings satisfaction with the ultimate goal being improvement and a lower handicap, winning is a bonus. So if you're the same it's understandable to not feel the excitement you might normally expect to with a win.

If you were a pro, or it were an important comp, all that matters is winning, and you only win by playing better than everybody else. So you should take a lot of pride in that IMO. Well done!

I was out playing a quick 9 on my own yesterday when the hail came - ended up picking up on the greens as putting was a joke (obv playing by myself scoring wasn't an issue). Anyway - it was tough. TO keep your card together well enough to win is no mean achievement. You certainly cannot ignore the conditions when evaluating a round. I'd take the win as a positive - you did better than everyone else out there.

Gents many thanks because there are a great deal of things I have read which hit the nail on the head, but poor driving ( shaft now changed back ) my triple bogies and missed 8" sloppy putt clouded some good golf decisions. A PP plays off 16 and he is a better player but he naturally hits the ball high and he just could not change his game when the wind and hail showed its face.

Thing is I play with some good lads and we have a good laugh and a good time, but it is driving home for 25 mins that thinking about the missed and poor shots that was bugging me.

Finished net 72 on a rare day when CSS was 72 and not 71 (pretty windy).

You can imagine the kicking I gave myself when I got home.

You have to take the positives from these things, I played a lot of good golf in between chucking shots away like they were candy. Only makes me more determined to go out there and kill it next time.

You played best, relative to the comp, on the day.
Consider it a scrappy 1-0 with a penalty in extra time...

In very difficult conditions the CSS never seems to reflect how much harder the course is. We can have a CSS of 70 on a flat calm day & 72 in a howling gale. I'm sorry, but I'd much more fancy my chances of playing to handicap in the calm conditions. In your shoes I'd be quite encouraged that I'd had a respectable score which included a lot of easy to put right mistakes.

Sounds like my medal round last weekend missing putts I been dropping with my eyes closed lately,my short game has been awful the last few rounds which has cost me shots all over the place.frustrating after playing the best golf of my life the last few months but that's golf for you each round is different .head up I say and get out there and attack it this weekend 👍

As others have said a win is a win, and you have to take confidence in the fact that you won and in difficult conditions. I think that is the best thing about playing golf, no matter how badly you play you can always find positives in your round somewhere.

2 of the 3 medals I have played this year I have just come up 2 shots short of first place, annoyed looking back on the round thinking I could have easily saved 3 shots somewhere but also happy to keep putting my self in position for that first win. I know its only a matter of time until I get over the line.

Back nine at ours is more open so the wind picks up and I smashed 19 points. My driving was back to good, short game was pro standard. My putting was eloquent. So the game is there it's just putting it together for that one round 👍

Back nine at ours is more open so the wind picks up and I smashed 19 points. My driving was back to good, short game was pro standard. My putting was eloquent. So the game is there it's just putting it together for that one round 👍

Yeah that's the difficult thing putting it all together for 18 holes. Keep plugging away and it will come. I used to struggle back 9 as a hole but now I'm down to just two holes damaging my scores. So need to work them out better.

the strange thing is kid2 is that I naturally hit a low ball, so when playing in the wind it does not seem much of a problem, wind and rain though is a royal pita. Putting today through wet through glasses was like looking through a prism.
The back nine today was as good as I have played off white tees for as long as I can remember in not ideal conditions.

Rain and wind is definitely a PITA. But you'll learn over time to not let it bother you too much...
