I played a mate of mine this morning for our usual pound on the front nine, pound on the back and pound overall. No great stakes involved, just enough to keep us interested, but it became apparent within fifteen minutes or so that I was about to witness something pretty special.

My mate is a very handy 5 handicapper who generally plays to that pretty regularly, and is not beyond putting in the odd sub par round. Last week he knocked it round two under gross.

He started today with two very solid birdies, and I joked "If you carry this on you'll finish 18-under." More fool me!

He canned a fifteen footer for his third straight birdie at 3, knocked his approach at 4 to two inches for another, got a fifth straight birdie at 5 and then canned a 25 footer for yet another at 6. All this, I hasten to add, from our white tees.

A boring up and down for par at 7 was followed by another tramline putt for birdie at 8, and after yet two more at 10 and 11 he stood on the 12th tee a rather ridiculous 9-under gross. I was playing to my handicap and getting absolutely stuffed.

Around this time you would start to think that he would get a bit nervy, but far from it. In fact, it was my game that started to unravel slightly, as I started to get nervous for him. And that is my question here - if someone else in your group is having the round of their lives, how does it impact on your own game?

My pal finished with a couple of dropped shots here and there and a tenth birdie for a quite magnificent 7-under gross 65, and a round I'll remember for a long time - maybe as long as he will. It was worth losing three quid to see it.

As for me? A steadyish 33 points. Dull when compared to the fireworks going on around me, but due in part to my reaction to my playing partner's heroics. We all know it's important to stay "in the now" when playing our own game, but I have never found myself getting ahead of myself when thinking of an opponents round. All in all, a rather surreal experience!!

Played a 4 handicapper on Sunday who had an eagle and several birdies. Had a couple of bad holes but in matchplay it didn't matter. Thing was he never looked like missing a putt (23 all round) and rarely got in trouble off the tee or missed a green. Very stylish but simple swing. Never ever seen anything as good as a -7 gross. Would that have been anywhere near the course record in a comp

It equals the course record from the whites, although clearly we were not playing a competitive round.

He has put his card in, although being Category One I suspect county will be quite strict, not least because he did not declare it a supplementary round before we started. A pity really, because we are playing a midweek medal next week, and a pound to a pinch of snuff says he'll play like an arse!!

my mate off 10 shot a 72 on Sunday, net 62 7 under for 43 points, he had 2 double bogies in the round aswell

he is a good player but can be wayward off the tee hence his 10 h/c. his short game is awesome and frequently has chip ins and the odd long putt. Par 5 18th was a good example, 490yds, 300+ yd drive, 6 iron (downwind) to about 10feet and putted out for a finishing eagle, simply stunning to watch. he will be off 9 on Sunday and no doubt have a mare lol.

I played well alongside him, it does tend to go that way for me, we play as a threesome regular and if one plays bad it tends to rub off and vice versa

Thats a awsome front nine,as someone said, try and play your own
game,whilst admiring great golf.
Our course record is -8 by our pro,my mate played with him and said
he had witness something special.

I witnessed a gross 68 (2 under) a few weeks ago and found myself cheering the guy on (not in a 'Get the hole' kind of way I hasten to add!!). If anything, it made me concentrate more and I found it a big motivation. I find I tend to play better golf when I play with better players. Kudos to your mate. A dream round!!!!

Scary good

That is a most impressive performance, hats off to your friend. As for me I've never seen anyone tear the course up like that but it would probably inspire me to raise my game :)

I played a round with a new pro, He killed the course. I admired his round. But watching him made me play the best round I have ever done. I went round 3 over par off a 16 H/c. Never come near it again a one off. But what a day that was will never forget it.

I'd have been happy to walk the course just to see this. A friend of mine use to make a few bob on the swiss tour a couple of years ago. Just as I staerted playing, he came home for good and started teaching me.

We went out for a couple of rounds, me shooting about 90(ish) him shooting 67's. It was unreal. Playing with people like this really inspire me to up my game.

Well done your man. Lucky you for being there. Always nice for someone to witness the good rounds. No one ever believes you if they don't.
