Journeyman Pro
Now we're on the tail end, how has everyone's winter training programme gone then? What's worked and what hasn't? I know we're not quite there yet but there are signs of spring emerging so let's checkin with progress...
No qualifiers here until April so I've still got another month to finalise the work I've been putting in.
I made a lot of progress last year but I wasn't happy with my posture and setup towards the end of the season so that's been my biggest area of work. I had my first ever golf lesson just before New Year and the use of a Trackman was a complete revelation. On the positive side it gave me a lot of confidence in what I was doing right, and it really helped me narrow down on the things I was doing badly - most significant of which was an occasional but open face-to-path issue.
I'm much happier with my setup now, I feel more connected with my arms in the swing, have much better body turn and am hitting my irons better than ever. Making the setup changes were a struggle for a month or so but the past couple of weekends I've felt like I've broken through the awkward feelings and my whole body has gotten comfortable with the new setup. I finally feel like I'm in a position where a thought of "whole body connected with soft hands" is working.
Putting hasn't seen any changes but I've been clocking more hours with the putter at home. Basic practice has previously been lacking with the putter but now, despite the winter conditions, I feel like I've made very few bad/stupid putts. Fortunately I do get to play on full greens all winter but they are very variable due to frost and whatnot.
This is only my 4th year playing and it's the first time I've had a constructive plan for the winter period. I feel better prepared and I'm excited to see what I can do this year. I would very much welcome spring and summer getting a hurry on now. I'm desperate to get playing properly again.
