winter rules??

Normally it means you can mark your ball on the fairway, clean it and replace it within 6 inches not nearer the hole. A big asset as the course gets muddier but it does put a premium on hitting the fairway. Always great when you find that ideal little tuft to tee it up on so you can get a really good lie!

ok so basically you hit the fairway you can pick your ball up and clean it and then place it back down. As long as the ball is on the fairway be it after a drive or chipping out from behind a tree

Basically yes, but remember to mark the ball position before you lift it to clean it, most people use a tee for this.

The use of Prefered Lies are at the discretion of the clubs committe. The decision on their use for the day is normally made by the Greenkeepers and Club Pro and will be posted on a notice. The reason is to allow players to clean the ball and use a better lie position when the fairways are wet and muddy, normally in Winter but sometimes in summer when there has been heavy rain. The normal method is to mark the ball, lift and clean it if you wish, then place it in a prefered position no more than six inches from the mark and no nearer the pin.

Medals are played in Summer so prefered lies do not normally apply.

We play medals all year so sometimes they do apply.

Most of the folk at our place don't bother marking their ball when lifting it and it causes no end of arguements I can tell you.

At our place they have just introduced Orange stakes before the greens, some 50 yards before, you are not allowed your trolley/buggy past these to help keep the course nice through the wetter conditions and you are not allowed to tend the flags, you may have it in if you are far away enough and on the green, its to reduce traffic around the hole, we also have the lift and clean if on the fairways.

It seems pointless to me Ben, at the same time, you've still got potentially 4 blokes walking up to and around the hole to retrieve the ball from the cup. Little bit of overkill.

That said, I never understood 'tending' the flag anyway.

Not sure if it has been mentioned , but once you replace your ball and take your hand away the ball is in play. You can't move it again, even if you have not taken your marker away. I have seen quite a few players nudging the ball around again for a still better lie.

Preferred Lies doe not necessarilly need to be on the fairway they can be through the green depending upon the condition of the Course.

They are there for the benefit of the Course rather than the players' so that the course doe not get 'churned up'.
