Winter Greens

Just found this on a turf forum (forums for everything these days!!)

If you top dress at this time of year when grass is not growing strongly you will weaken the crown of the plant and encourage disease by smothering the grass.

This was posted in Feb.

So if the grass isnt growing why are clubs tining?

It's still growing like a muddyfunster down in the balmy south, hence the lawn mower is coming out for the 3rd "last cut of the year" this weekend. :o

Hollow cored and filled/ brushed etc a few weeks ago, perfect timing for the greenstaff this year as a good amount of rain followed and some decent temperatures. The holes have recovered quickly and are barely noticeable already.

Not sure what the technical term is, scarifying??, but it leaves tiny "furrows" all across each greens. This type of maintenance always seems to take longest to recover from at our place, makes holing 3 footers a very nervous thing indeed.

They were not that bad, you just played sh*te. You cannot judge the boat by greens in April. They had 4 months of snow and -15 deg temps most winters, so the grass don't start growing till june-ish. Try playing it in Aug and this time don't take driver on every hole :D :D :D

I think ours were done in April and don't really care as my putting is usually pretty sh1te anyway. Also, whatever our greenkeepers are doing they are doing right. Our greens are said to be the best in the county. Love 'em !

We got a new greenkeeper in APril and he's done a great job upto now, but has treated the greens 5 times to date, and its working like a demon

We held the Trilby Tour in August, and to be fair it he got them true, and too fast to be honest. We've got 9 new bunkers going in over the winter, already had 2 others, two holes getting totally redesigned (and god did they need them) and I think all the members can't wait for next year.

A winter of pain will be worth it

Hopefully will show up a lot better for the TT too.
