Windows computer help please

I will be telling them that I have Ubuntu and not windows and ask them how they got my details, they shouldnt hang about on the line much after that.

That should do it! In my case that would be partly true of course. :D

Everyone who has a Windows machine has malicious files on their computer.

I assume this is a reference Macs being superior?

In reality the security of a Windows PC and a Mac are pretty even, although there seems to be a bit of a myth amongst some Mac users that their machines have far superior security.

The Windows market is not helped by the fact that so many people use it, the numbers game makes it more worthwhile to try and exploit windows more than any other OS, as this scam shows.

Not a myth. Unix based machines are simply less prone to the effects of viruses by design. The argument that nobody writes viruses for them is only partly the reason, but it is at least in part because they have less success with them. Most of the exploits of Mac OS or Safari are highly technical and irrelevant to the everyday user. The Safari ones are usually identified on the Windows version anyway.

<grabs a beer and sits back to watch the three-way Windows v Mac v Unix/Linux bunfight>

OK, where do we start?

RGDave, currently running...

Windows - XP/Vista/7
Mac - dunno what it's called
Linux - ubuntu, mintLXDE, easypeasy

I know which machine is the fastest, and it's not a Mac.

I would love to play along on the phone but not actually do anything...

Then say "Oh sorry I did that on my toaster, can you run through it again when I am on my computer?"

Similar to that, I have another work colleague, who set up either his mother, or MIL with ubuntu on her system.

These guys phoned her up, and being a relatively naive old lady (from a technical viewpoint) she desperately tried to comply, but obviously couldn't. Apparently the ordeal went on for a fair while.

I can only imagine how amusing it would have been to be a fly on the wall!

I'd love a tutorial on how to hack some of my Linux systems. :D
