Wimbledon

Can't believe anyone is still using the ABE thing against him. It's widely known that was an off the cuff joke to (I believe) Tim henman who had started the whole exchange by winding him up about Scotland.

If anyone takes the time to see or read his ABE comment will see it was totally lighthearted and an non-issue, personally think he is a superb sportsman and deserves all the plaudits he gets.
I get more wound up when we get the petty Scottish/British arguments over him, he's Scottish and proud and represents Britain, no different to Chris Hoy etc.

And like the Gareth Bale thing at the Euros recently plenty have bitten and therefore provided the response that Murray / Bale were after!

He wasn't after a reaction though, that's the point, it was a throwaway retort to an Englishman who was teasing him about Scotland.

Do people seriously believe the "Anyone But England" comment was anything other than a joke between him and Henman?!

If you know anything at all about tennis and Murray / Henman's character it's not hard to see it as that.

An incredible sportsman and a decent bloke too it would seem. We're lucky to have him!

Is that any different to a footballer celebrating or fist pumping when they score or goal or make a save ? I don't think I have ever heard a tennis player say they feel disrespected when an opponent shouts or fist pumps when a point or game or set is won

As for the anyone but England - that's just rivalry between the nations that has been around for centuries on a sporting field - does anyone really expect a Scotsman or Welshman or Irishman to support England at any point in any sport ? I certainly wouldn't

I rest my case, it should be perfectly OK to think in reverse then!!

Also you cant really compare football to tennis. IMO you shouldn't see those antics on a tennis court where your opponent is just the other side of the net. Similarly in matchplay golf you wouldn't expect one to do fist pumps and scream out in front of your opponent. Its just not the done thing and is bad form IMO. We're not just talking one shot to win a set btw, Murray was doing it most of the match.

Maybe Federer has acted like this before but I cant remember seeing it to be honest.

Murray was in the final of the biggest Tennis Comp going with the world watching him - yes he will be pumped up and when he hits a great winning shot you could see he was really up for it - absolutely nothing wrong with fist pumping and cheering yourself on - Federer himself has done it - watch back when he played Raonic and how he reacted when he won a crucial break point against him in the second set - he also fist pumps and let's out screams , Novak , Nadal - they all do it - it's just mini celebrations

As for it happening in golf - watch any Ryder Cup to see exactly people roaring and fist pumping in front of their opponents even closer than over the net

Where do you stand on crying Phil.
Murray cried and you didn't mind him being emotional in the biggest tennis tournament in the world with the world watching.

Ronaldo also in the biggest football tournament in the world at the time cried and you question it.
Double standards and hypocrisy spring to mind.

Funny how you didn't answer yesterday as you probably realised you are a hypocrite

Great guy, dry Scottish sense of humour, brilliant tennis player - my wife loves him to bits.

I never quite understand why the best tennis player that has emerged in many a year is required by some to have the personality of a demented XFactor contestant?

He is a proven and truly world class tennis player - is that not good enough (this is not a dig at your post SILH)

TBH Chris if you look back his ability has never been questioned, it's more about peoples like or dislike of him, he's no different to any other World Class sportsman, they are on the whole loved and hated by someone, look at the Ronaldo comments on the Football thread or how certain Golfers rub people up for no reason, personally I find it incredible anyone can hate someone they don't know (I suppose the balance of this is how some are loved by people) admire, appreciatte, respect, yes, absolutely, but to get such strong feelings about them, astonish's me.

He avoided these comments yesterday and he won't answer yours either. Pathetic!

Indeed you are right! (Although I can't stand Ronaldo)

Hate is a harsh word - don't think you can hate someone unless you know them

Murray for me has always been a very good ambassador for his sport - sure he is moody at times on the court but then I'm not sure what sportsman isn't , he always seems humble both on and off the court and certainly plays with passion and pride both for GB and Scotland - his reaction when he won the Olympics and Davis Cup shows that.

But because he is at times moody and a bit angry and the ABE comment some will always take a dislike to him

Ronaldo is just someone I have never really liked - he is a massively talented player who is up there with the best that have played but there seems a lot of selfishness about him when playing in a team environment

There are a number of sportsmen I dislike all for varying reasons but hate - nah the list of people who I hate is very small and only people I have met. And I think that's relevant for most

Unfortunately Phil, some people use the word hate when talking about particular sportsmen, I don't understand it, sometimes they just follow the crowd.
Dislike, irritate, can't stand etc lot's of different words can be used, even your own dislike of Ronaldo is based on perception, no different to me about Stevie G, great talent, does loads of good in his own time, would feel different if he played for anyone else but you's😃

I must be very lucky as I don't hate anyone - and never have, as you say it is a horrid and much over and wrongly used word and I believe a very self-destructive emotion.

I detest Mourinho as a person

Went on Saturday and watched the girls final which was fantastic. The girl that won was only 15 but looks like she could be a real star. Then on to Henman Hill to watch the end of the ladies singles final, and then back to No. 1 court to watch Heather Watson win the Mixed doubles semi-final.

Great day out courtesy of my daughters birthday present to me.
