Why Is Monty Picking on Poulter ?

I heard Monty on the radio having a dig at Ian Poulter about no playing in the Vivendi Trophy at the weekend. He didn't however have a go at the other no shows.

So my question is whats Monty's problem and is he going to let personal issues cloud his judgement when it comes to the Ryder Cup selections ?

I'd have thought that a simple phone call would have saved all this fuss. OK Pulter only just missed qualifying for this weeks event in the US, if he was never going to play in France why did he not say so earlier ? taking his family out to the US was a sure give away he wasn't interested in going to France.

If he's just said so it would all have been okay I'm sure.

he was our top performer at the last RC 'cause he had a point to prove. Hopefully he'll be fully commited come the event. We need someone like him in the team.

Hi,
I think Monty thinks he was lucky to get picked for the rider cup the last time and he is just letting him know that he won't be getting a pick this time unless he quailfies he didn't make much of an effort to qualify for the last RC heading off to the US instead of making the team by playing in a couple of events in europe.

I just don't think this is the right attitude for someone who is Europe's Ryder Cup captain. These comments should have been made in private and not through the media.

There's a bit of history between them, and I know Monty can be a drama queen, but personally I'd make Poulter baiting a national sport. I'd dress him up in his most ridiculous outfit and have him chased through the fields by a pack of hounds. The man is a complete knob

Poulter is a bit of a tosser, but he is also one of Europe's best players and Monty's comments should have been kept private.

Monty is going to be a catasrophe of a captain, people continue to attack Nick Faldo for his lack of people skills, all I can say is you aint seen nothing yet.

Laurence Donegan doesn't seem to have any time for him either, and he can't help but let his dislike colour some of his articles (though not necessarily this one). Not a great thing for a journalist.

Monty is probably a pretty difficult guy and I do worry about his captaincy a wee bit. But then the players or committee did seem to want him appointed for this one, rather than him seeking it out. Which must say something for him.

ps, I meant to quote Birdieman's post but clicked the wrong button.

I agree that Monty's man management skills will be closely scrutinised in the coming months (particularly on here where there is no hiding place) and I think these latest comments in the press send totally the wrong signals to prospective players and Poulter in particular. I think form his perspective he might well think now that he's acheieved his aim to play in one and will plan next season around the US and his family and effectively ignore the RC points chase.

I think the answer to the op is that Monty is a big fat bully, and Poults is a weedy born victim hiding behind a big clown costume.

I seem to remember the media telling us why we won the recent Ryder Cups. It was the team spirit.
The guys pulled together and played as a team for each other and for the captain. Who could forget the atmosphere when Darren stood on the first tee at the Kay Club. The USA didn't have a chance.

Now where are we??????????and what are we doing?????????

Bitching in the ranks and from the top already is a very very poor show, the RC team ALL need to get their act togeather, cos if they lose again, their excuses may fall on very deaf ears.

storm/teacup - nothing much else happening at the moment so any comments are blown up.

As DCB states it was probably never in Poulters plans to be at the event in the first place so why the big fuss? I'd be pretty sure the organisers weren't expecting to see him.

Can't decide if it was a lack of manners on Poults behalf not to notify everyone correctly (as it seems many were expecting him to play) or another Monty rant to keep him in the public eye and flexing his captaincy muscles. Either way it doesn't look good all round and hardly a good start to the Ryder Cup campaign

I find it a bit unprofessional for a RC cpt to take up the gauntlet and not establish immediately some itinerary for the players and thereby know, whos gonna be where and when?

Press have presented a storm in a tea cup.

End of. I'm quite sure Poulter will be in Montys plans come Ryder Cup time.

A lots going to depend on how people are playing. I know he's got 3 picks but there could be a lot of newer guys in the running for qualification next year and lets face it, Garcia hasn't done much recently but would be a shoe-in pick. There could be some interesting names in the hat.
