Why is Luke Donald so good ?

Pretty much covered all of his attributes above , I 'd also add hard work/dedication on the practice ground.

Julian Tutt came up with the stat that when he hit's an errant drive it's only 10% of the tie to the right

hes got some balls. as much as i like rose i never really thought that he would mount a serious challenge yesterday. luke sunk a raker putt to go three ahead and rose then watched yet another putt slip by the hole.

To think that a few years ago on here we had a discussion about whether Luke would ever make it up the rankings, and whether he was just another 'also-ran' touring pro making a comfortable living. We pretty much agreed that he had a solid iron and short game, but lacked length to compete, and lacked the mental toughness to get to the top. At least that was the gist od the discussion.

The interesting thing to me, is not why he is so good, but how he turned his career around. Was it just practice, or maybe it was lifestyle changes as well? It'd make a good mag article.

After a lesson a while ago my coach said to watch a few clips of the pros to get an understanding of what we were doing in the session. I watched a lot of Donald's and has really helped. The whole thing is so effortless and smooth. Can't really add to what others have said but glad he is now enjoying such success and the rewards that come with it.

Long game,
iron play,
short game,
course management,

All of the above ?

I watched him play yesterday and it was just clinical, some may even say boring.
I was intrigued to see how he would play the 18th but not surprised to see 3 wood, 7 iron, wedge 2 putts.
Job done and another 750,000 Euros

The Patron Saint of putting :)
practice/confidence

Plays His Own Game

Everyone could learn a lot from Luke, a class act.

Application...

He just makes sure he uses every part of his 'talent' to the full... Exactly why Jonny Wilkinson was a great goal kicker... Something to do, maybe, that they use same coach/guru...

Followed Luke at Wentworth on the friday and was amazed that a man of average height and weighing what looked like about 10 stone could be so smooth and balanced. The fact that Rose and Queros outdrove him all the time had no effect on him. Watched him on TV saturday and sunday; just more of the same.
I am going to try and copy his style and not try to hit the cover off the ball but do everything at 75%.
He will win a major.

He's a man who has an abundance of talent but has found a way to monopolise what he has and make it functional and cohesive. Very little to go wrong and very easy to control. Golf has been described as a simple game made hard but Donald takes a simple game and makes it simple. Play to your strengths and don't compound errors. He's going to be #1 on and off for a few years yet. As for the major the only thing he can't control is luck and every major winner needs a slice of that at one point or another over the four days.
