Hi Gents

I am considering changing clubs, my current club is now trying to turn into a fancy spa and I think in the long run this will affect the golf. There is also 2 clubs closer to home.

I wondered what is important to you and why you joined your club.

I wanted a links course because I was sick of not being able to play for 6 months of the year, the drainage in my old club was none existent. I also wanted decent practice facilities and a nice atmosphere. The club I joined is always immaculate and without doubt the friendliest in the area.

When I changed my criteria was based on the following:

Cost (Speaks for itself)
Proximity to home (staggering distance if I fancied a few beerios afterwards).
Quality of course (no point joining a course that doesn't excite / challenge you),
Number of competitions available to enter throughout the year (I wanted to be able to enter a comp every week, not every month),
Reputation (i.e is it full of stuffy nosed farts)
Opportunity to represent the club in team matches (I enjoy playing "Team" golf and this was a major factor in joining where I did.

UP1.

One of the best courses in the area (in my opinion) also very friendly down to earth members....not to far from you either...out of interest which club are you at now ?

No booking - just roll up and go out (comps permitting)
Reasonably priced
10 minutes down the road and easy to get to from work in the summer
No winter mats and only temp greens in frost
Tricky but fair course which is only 6 years old and maturing. Once the young saplings are no longer staked they will provide an even greater challenge
Decent practice facilities
Drawn competititions. Easy to meet different members
Good food and banter

Proximity,I can cycle to mine in no time at all. When I joined three weeks ago I didn't have a car. Greens are some of the best in the area, although the practise facilities are crap.

I had a long lay off from competitive golf and was only playing a handful of times each year but especially once a year for a long weekend in September with friends.

I'd really enjoy the golf and think I must play more...

Then the following July, I'd be thinking I really need to get a round or two in before the golfing weekend.

So I came back one year and thought I'm going to join somewhere and see if I can play a bit more.

I picked Beverley as it was a decent course but most of all it was about half the price of other local courses. So that way, if I didn't play that much it wasn't going to cost a fortune.

Nearly two years on, I'm really enjoying my golf (mostly). It's a very friendly club and the course is a good test and an even better walk.

The comps are rarely drawn and the only roll ups are during the week but it isn't a cliquey club and single players or pairs will always get a game and all are happy to play with anyone really.

Very happy with my club indeed.

Plenty of roll ups.
Very competitive.
Challenging course, with great views.
But most of all its not to stuffy.

I've' been a member of a few clubs and I find its hard to find a balance between good course and down to earth membership.

I wanted links golf and had the choice of a couple of places but after asking around and getting recommendations joined portsalon and it is a great place, friendly people and great course what more do you need!

Close to home (under 2 miles)
Good course - challenging
Good facilities - 9 hole course, plus practice area, plus gym, health club (aspirational use only)
Reasonable rates for all inclusive membership
Not stuffy

3 things,

Cost, the membership and the course.

Cost because we all want value for money.

The membership - nobody wants to play where the atmosphere isn't friendly.

The course - I wanted somewhere that I could play all year - not just in the summer months, maybe it is not the best quality course around this area but it is playable all year and offers good value for money.

Distance & Money...only a few miles away and they do an intermediate membership for 23-29 year olds for £295

My first club though and i'm sure I'll try somewhere else in a few years

You hit the nail on the head here :)

I am leaving my present club at the end of this month as it is only playable in full for 7 or 8 months of the year due to temp greens or closure cause of wet / flooding.

The greens are great in the summer months but no good to me if you cannot use them from November to April!!!!!!!!!

I pay my large wedge of money for 12 months proper golf not " pitch and try to putt on this bit of mown fairway " for 4 or 5 months :(

Hi Guns
