Is it just me, or does everyone get freezing cold on driving ranges. Maybe it's just that we use them more in the cold winter months, or maybe it's the shape of them that funnels the wind around the practise areas. Maybe I stand around too much instead of getting through my 100 balls in 20 minutes, but whatever the reason, I get brass monkeyed.

I'm sure there are some that are heated but that must be a tremendous waste of money. I tend not to go when its dark as the ball disappears after 150 yards or so. But at the moment I can't get motivated to go at all. I'll wait till it warms up a bit and just play the course instead.

I use Maidenhead Drving Range and I have to say that it suits most of my needs. It has good quality mats and balls (yellow Srixon range balls). It also has a variety of targets so it makes it interesting. It also has a number of heated bays!!!!!!!! They also have a very welcoming clubhouse with a decent tea and coffee machine.

I was there today between 12 and 2. Admittedly I had a bse layer, polo jumper and a wool jumper and hat on but I hit my first bucket in one of the outside bays and stopped to chat with my coach and felt perfectly warm. Stopped for a nice cup of tea and then went to the covered bays to hit another bucket. My hands were getting a touch cold but I just held them up to the heater and they were fine.

Just a shame I couldn't get any tempo going and seemed to be trying to think of too many things. Not a great session but at least I was hitting balls and my coach gave me something new to work on

Tommo...the range I go to has lots of good bays and heaters(o.k. you have to switch them on every 2 mins...but hey ho!!)
they also run promos where if I spend £25/50 on boosting my card then they will match it!
Great marketing and the place always seem to be busy, also has good restuaraunts(?),ladies slimmer club(interesting!)and full tution facilities....cd,video etc, plus top name PGA pros(expensive but good...apparently)
Go up a few nights a week and love it!! :)

Have to say Maidenhead is brilliant. Family owned and very friendly it has now got N1golf (www.n1golf.com) as a teaching concern. The teaching pros are top notch, there is a lot of investment going on in terms of upgrading (short game area etc) and as I've said the facilities are good. A tad expensive for a balls but if you become a member you do get more balls at cheaper prices. Also if you put £40 on your card they give you £10 free.

Perhaps the greatest asset though is its location. It is tucked away out of town and doesn't attract teenagers or idiots who are just there to muck about of try and hit the balls as far as they can with their cheapo clubs, drinking lager and dressed in football shirts (you know the type!). It seems from the 3 months I've been there that it is a haunt for those that are there purely to practice and improve. It is a real sanctuary and somewhere you can really work in peace and quiet on your game

Swing like a strimmer, 100 balls a minute and you soon warm up. Actually got quite hot tonight, or was that just hot under the collar?

i find i get hot a the range no matter what the weather with all the swinging. Plus my club's financial woes mean that they are doing a 2 for 1 offer on driving range balls every night 5-7! 120 balls for £2

I have three ranges within 10 - 20 minutes, each faces in a different direction so if I checked the wind I could try to keep a wall between me and it, though as a generally warm body I don't usually bother.

if I wish a little luxury ranging I can travel a little further, about 35 mins, where, forget your coffee machines, they have a bar and restaurant and several TV screens showing sport of some kind.
