Interestingly Rob key's name has been thrown into the ring but i think they will go for either Strauss or KP. My preference will be Strauss as he's a bit more experienced.
From the noise's coming out of the ECB , it would appear KP is going to end up captaining both the test and one-day sides. Still not sure about this but can't see a stand-out candidate at the moment.
Never Strauss for me, I think it would be a disaster.
Pietersen is a great cricketer but I think he sees things as The KP Show + special guests a bit too much for my liking.
I would like to see Rob Key as captain, he is doing a sterling job at kent, is capable of big runs at test level and brings good experience to the side. He just needs to look after himself a bit better as this season at Kent, he has looked a bit of a lard-arse (pot/kettle) to me.
Also, Joe Denly, also of kent, should be in as a batsmen. Get rid of Bell for crying out loud.
Of the current squad of players I don't believe there is a decent captain amongst them. Vaughan has not been worth his place for the past season or so. Collingwood skippers the one day side but would have been out of the test side again if not for his superb hundred in the second innings. Flintoff is a none starter after his antics last time he had the job. Bowlers invariably make poor captains. So we come down to KP and Strauss. Not convinced by either of these two. However, I also don't agree with bringing in someone like Rob Key. If he was good enough he would be playing for England at this level. I can't see the ECB bringing someone in to captain if they are not currently holding a place.
Think Collingwood is out of the running anyway as he also quit as one day captain today and all reports state that the next captain will be in charge of both sides.
In effect Vaughan has been selected recently based only on his skill as a captain so cannot see why they will not bring someone in an the same basis, albeit that he will need to be decent with the bat as well.
It helps if you play for one of the trendier counties. If he were at surrey or yorkshire key would already be a permanent fixture in the side.
I would put my bets on pietersen.
I think now is the time to shake up the whole team. Bell is not up to scratch, neither is ambrose. Panesar is a joke charachter in my eyes, a decent spinner but he has a limited arsenal of variations and he behaves like an absolute prat. He appeals like a deranged idiot for every minute shout and when he takes a wicket acts like a whirling dervish on speed. Sorry but that just isnt cricket in my eyes, grow up or ship out.
For me the england test line-up would be; Key (c), Denly Strauss, Cook, Pietersen, Flintoff, G Jones (wkt), Broad, Sidearse, Anderson & Panesar if he grows up.
My thinking is that Key is simply a top drawer opener and along with Denly would make a formidable opening partnership. There is then steadily good batting with strauss, cook and pietersen with flintoff to follow. Geraint Jones gets the nod as wickie for me as I feel he was wrongly exiled from the side in the forst place. I include Broad as not only does he have a great future as a fast bowler, he can also bat like a genius, we need batting further down the order and he gives us just that. Sidebottom gets the nod for his tremendous work rate and his consistency in putting the ball in the right areas and he is always a wicket threat. Anderson is in as he is in my oppinion the best new-ball bowler we have at present. Panesar would be in, but only if he learns to behave himself a bit better on the field.
There were some interesting comments on 606 about the inadvisibility of the captain also being an opener. The argument was that it is mentally fatiguing for a captain after a long spell in the field and he needs the break before batting.
Don't know what Key is like in the field but he better be good at catching as captains invariably put themselves in the slips. I know that Kent had one of the England great batsmen who was also a good slip fielder and generously proportioned so maybe it's a local tradition?
The ideal would be a good wicketkeeper who can also bat well at six. Is there one hanging around?
Whilst i agree with most of your thoughts Jon , i have to disagree about Monty. I love his on-field enthusiasm and little mannerisms . It's important to have a mix of characters and not a bunch of Automotons . Also , it's been a while since we had a decent batting wicketkeeper , probably Alec Stewart. Maybe Foster at Essex should be given another chance ?
Jones is still a crap glovesman and the Aussies brutally exposed his batting deficiencies.
No idea what your problem with Bell is. A great fielder and a quality batsman that sometimes frustrates by not fulfilling his ability - at least he has the genuine ability.
Panesar - no-one seems to mind that every other international spinner hoots and hollers at every delivery. Given the amount of shocking decisions he's had this year, I'm surprised he doesn't put his appeals in writing. This talk of him having no variety is just rubbish. He would not have the wickets or calibre of victims if he was an average spinner.
There is no doubt in my eyes that KP will get the nod as he is the only man guaranteed to play in all three formats of the game and the ECB obviously want the one-man captain. The question is will it help KP mature as a player or will it knock down his averages like it seems to all other batsmen/captains?
And there's me thinking that any member of the toonarmy had to have a sense of humour to qualify for that loyal band!!What happened to you......a bypass???I'm already on record here as saying that I watch the game on 5(and enjoy it)So lighten up!
