Tonights little quiz :)

..
"There are quite a few things about the current setup than can stand improvement.
The captaincy of teh team are honours which every professional aspires, and these posts should be bestowed with care and not treated as a political football., which they have lately become.

The PGA might restudy the system for teh selection of the team. Today teh complicated points scoring basis puts too much emphasis on circuit tournaments. it is already a foregone conclusion that no pro can make teh team who does not devote the overwhelming majority of his time to the year-round tour. Far more value should be placed on showings in the majors.

We have played the Ryder on some good courses ...but too much attention is still given to courses offering an attractive commercial deal, when teh most important concern should be to select our very best courses for this international event.

The Ryder Cup should not be held in Autumn - that is a great season for football but interest in golf is then far below the heights it reaches in spring and summer. "

It's from Gene Sarazen's biography, first published in 1950

Amazing how similar the issues are to now. Also recognising that he played his Ryder matches in the 1920s and 1930s ! (he was in his late 40s in 1950 and WW2 took a big chunk out of the end of his career)

Interesting.

I thought it would be more recent. Plus ca change as the French say.

I wonder is there some context here though. Just wondered if the Squire might have any reason to not be that happy with the Ryder Cup set up. According to my research he played on 6 teams but was never appointed Captain. Hagen captained the first 6 US teams, then Hogan 2 up to 1949. Snead captained the 1951 team. Just a thought. Can any golf historians shed any light? Was there a falling out?
