I vote for me

I've been saying all year that if I can just get the ball into play off the tee, then I've got some kind of chance to learn how to play this game.

I've come to terms with the fact that I'm never going to be 'proper good', so all I want is to middle it off the tee and get it on the short stuff - distance is unimportant.

Up 'till now it's been push slices galore, averaging about 180 yards into the right rough, or worse.

So..........

Sneaked a cheaky 9 holes in after work yesterday.

Forget the fact that the chipping and putting were awful - I can work on that.

But.

I used driver on 5 holes :

3rd : push slice into the rough ( Bad :( )
4th : straight down the middle 220 yards ( Good :) )
6th : slight push fade but safe as houses ( Ok :p )
8th : perfectly straight 225 yards ( :D )
9th : 1st effort off the hosel 100 yards oob ( tried to skin it :o )
: 2nd effort 225 straight as something that is as straight as you could possibly want :D )

As I walked off, was I thinking :

A) That's good, if I can consistantly hit drives like that, I'll get a couple of good rounds in soon.

or

B) 220-230 yards?. Poof ! I wonder how I can get that up to 250 yards ?

I always, and I mean this, always, find that I hit the ball further the slower I try and swing.

This gives me a nice rhythm, which obviously puts the middle of the face on the middle of the ball, and usually finds the middle of the fairway. Trouble starts when I try to hit the ball.

My pro asked me once, do you try and HIT the ball, or just swing the club and let the ball get in the way. He said that there was nothing wrong with both approaches, some are hitters, some are swingers (ooh err). I used to be a hitter, now I like to think that I am a swinger of the club, and I'm much more consistent.

Worked for me!!! :)

220-230 in the middle is good enough. 250 in the trees ain't all its cracked up to be!

Exactly !

But what kind of Pillock! ( with a capital P and an exclamation mark ) would spend four months of agony with one single aim in mind

And then as soon as he is even within sight of reaching it ( please note 'within sight of' NOT 'having reached it and being so consistant that it's now become boring' ), is already not happy with his skill set.

I'll reiterate

1) I'm not very good
2) To be better, I need to get the ball in play 220 -230 up the middle
3) I don't play/practise/have enough understanding of my swing to be able to fine tune it to within 2 or 3% of my maximum physical capabilities.
4) I've always said that I'll be happy when I can reach my target ( 230 yards , yadda yadda yadda )
5) I'm blimmin not happy. I'm already telling myself that I should be better than my logical limitations.

I'm not to bothered about what I have to do to hit the ball 250 yards plus. I know that if/when I can put the time/money/effort into it, I'll be able to set myself targets to work towards maximising my skills.

But at the moment, I'm playing off 18.

If I can hit a driver straight 220 yards, and a hybrid 180, then that's all the par 4s up to 400 reached except maybe for a chip and a putt. So I can reach every green in regulation, except for 2 or 3 of the really low SI holes.

So with more work on my putting I can then, in theory, by just using my existing swing and physical skills , concentrate purely on my short game.

I don't need to worry about swing planes, the transition from backswing to downswing, weight transfer. Etc etc.

Which means that I can start bringing the handicap down.

15 should be simple
13 is achievable ( my pb from the 90s )
BUT also
There's no reason why that couldn't become single figures.

At the moment I can't even play to 18 ( I've done it once in just over a year ).

I've now reached the Eurika moment.

AND I'M STILL NOT BLOODY SATISFIED !!!

Like I said,

' What a complete pillock!'

It's human nature I think, or male nature at least.

I've a much better chance of hitting a nice drive if I swing smoothly, but I'm always thinking "that's not gone as far as my better ones."

No need to guess what I try to do when I'm on the tee of a par 5 or our 300yd par 4 :o

CH : How long have you been playing ?

I remember going through this when I'd only been paying a couple of years, I practised & practised, and got more & more frustrated, and then finally though 'to hell with it'.
Lo' and behold, thats when I started to drop, and 20yrs after taking the game up, finally reached Single figures at 47yrs old !

Stop thinking about how far you it, just concentrate on a repeatable swing, and keeping it in play.

So easy to say :)

I've been saying to myself so long that I believe I believed it.

But my ego is so huge that I, obviously, don't.

:(

in answer to your question ;

I took the game up initially 30 years ago, had a few years at it - could hit it straight as a die, but with no power. Handicap 22-17,

Gave up for the original Mrs CH

Took it up again in the mid 90s. Still couldn't get any distance ( anyone see a pattern forming ? ) but learned to keep my slice down to a fade. Handicap went from 17 - 13 by the mid 90s

Gave up for the 2nd and existing Mrs CH

Joined the forum Feb last year, pennyless and depressed ( long story ) looking for the cheapest crappiest clubs I could get, just to give me an excuse to start again. Then Jammie ( My hero ) gave me his old set ( March, I believe - and damn fine Titleist to boot ) and I've been hacking around this time for about 15 months.

I've been fighting a huge push slice ever since.

But I'll get there ( probably about 2 weeks before I buy my first wheelchair )

;)

I mean,

All I want is to hit the ball dead straight, 300 yards with my driver, within a 2 degree arc. Then be able to hit my irons exact distances to stop within a couple of feet of the pin ( with backspin, of course )

Followed by the ability to dead weight my putts to within 6", and hole every putt under 12'.

Oh, and throw in the skills to hit every wedge distance from 120 yards down, and hole bunkershots ( and the odd chip and run for good measure )

Is that too much to ask ? :D

Of course, I'll need to win the jackpot at the lottery first, to be able to afford the time to play.

So first things first, then. Anyone got any good numbers for Saturday ? ;)

I think if we could hit the ball 300 down the middle with a nice smooth swing we'd still try to hit the cover off it to get 320!

Hehe.. I hit a drive 299 yesterday and felt totally GUTTED, one poxy yard more :D

.....more, more, MORE I SAY!

I would say I'm quite clearly the biggest tw*t here for coming back into the game when I could quite clearly have stayed 'retired' and avoided all this pain and anxiety :D

I win. Been playing for just over a year, and if hooking were an olympic sport I'd be in the England team, then last Sunday I drove off on a par 3 (287yds) the ball sailed in a beautiful arc and came to rest level with the pin 6" off the green. Oh what joy! and yes I four putted the sod.

Iv dropped the driver from my bag completely as the bad shots were outweighting the good ones....No good being way out if its in the rough or the cabbage.....
Im now hitting my 3 Wood off the tee and have to say that the consistency is night and day between it and the driver.....
Im hitting on average 90% of my fairways with it....And ill take that all day long over anything.....Now if i could just get that handicap to tunble :D :D
