Just got back from a 5 hour round.. not a great day.. 30 points

however had a row with some members at the club we played..

here was the scene

we got there for our 10:30 tee to be told we were following a pro event hosted by porche so expect slow play

fair enough no issue we just went with it.. even had a little following up the first lol which was novel

on the 13th its a par 3 massive down hill teeing over the 12th green with the 14th tee approx 10 yards to the left of the 13th green

I had won the hole previous so was me to go

the pros (who were really really slow.. I guess when there is that much money on it you take you time) were just teeing off on the 14th tee and I said to my group if I am slightly off line im going to kill someone here so we waved the group behind to play to the 12th green.. to which they waved us to play

eventually got a shout "play your bloody shot"

so I did and landed just off the green

when we got down the members ripped into us

"why are you waiting"

erm because the pros are just teeing off and I dont want to kill them

"just hit and shout fore, your holding us up"

how are we? we are literally on the heels of a pro event and their taking their time.. we cant go in front of them and I am not going to risk killing someone just so you can play 2 minutes quicker

"but you didnt hit them"

yes but I could have easily just a slight off line and I take someone out.. is it worth someones life just for 2 mins?

"grumble.. complain.. swear"

walked away from them then and just carried on

in the end we finished on the tails of the pros and this group had lost a hole on us

who was in right?

You were. The group behind you should wind their neck in.

im glad people agree!

they were a 5 ball aswell (looked like they had teamed a 3 and a 2 up because they knew it would be slow) so do they even have a standing on the course?

id never tee off with someone remotely in range, ive hit someone before (who was fine) but made me feel awful the rest of the round.. so id never deliberately do it.. even if I was a professional.. (actually thinking about it I think even the pros waited until that tee was clear before playing.. hence the even longer hold up)

shame I lost my match play on that hole aswell.. but soon as I lost it found some form to take into the new season

Maybe Ive mis understood the lay out of your course., but surely if the green was clear you would play? If the next group is on the next tee then theres nothing to worry about, as surely regardless of the pro event you'd play if they were just normal members?

OP said 14 tee is only approx 10 yards to left of green they were playing. So a slightly pulled tee shot could very well land amongst the group teeing off 14 and he didn't want to take a chance

The tee was only slightly left of the green

however if they were member I may have played as the members were playing off the yellows today so that tee was further left so out of eye line and safe

the comp white tees were in my eye line and a slight hook off the tee (which I had done previous today) was too risky

They were muppets. Safety always take priority. I have played on a number of courses where the next tee is alongside a green and if anyone feels slightly uncomfortable about hitting into the green then you just wait until they have teed off. Basic safety and courtesy.

Safety and common sense takes priority in my book; unfortunately there's too many self important people who insist the world revolves around them.

There's normally a sign on the tee at holes like that telling you who has priority, not that the people behind me paid any attention to it the last time I played a hole like that.

I'd definitely wait unless the group on the tee had indicated for us to play and we're watching for stray balls.

One of the things that grinds my gears is when the group behind starts hitting approach shots as soon as we step off th green, like they're too good to miss a green from 150.

When you are taking the shot, it's your call. If you are worried you might hit the players on the 14th tee, chances are good that you will either do just that or you will hit an absolutely terrible shot completely out of direction instead. It is just how our subconscious works. It knows no negative. So if you think "Don't hit towards the tee", that's exactly where the ball will go. Or, because your conscious mind is all to aware that that is the danger, it will prevent your subconscious from taking over and try to control the shot, which never ever works. So you did the right thing when you waited. People who don't understand that are just dumb.

plus these morons were 20 yards the other side of the green so it was a good chance I'd hit them aswell lol

What I always do in situations like this is get my pencil out and my card and say" can you give me your name and what your complaint is about so I can inform your secretary of the problem and the nature of your complaint"
This is usually enough to quieten them down.
You and nobody else are in charge of your ball and you choose when to play.
Clubs are full of idiots like this.!

Yeah fair enough, saftey first. As someone else said holes like these should have a sign advising of the right of way or when it should be safe to play. We have a couple holes like that, i wouldn't worry about it just folk being impatient.

my mate was a bit more vocal standing up for me and they backed down lol

however we both put poor reviews down for the course on the state of the members.. hopefully someone will take note of it

i wouldn't have entertained them with an explanation. i would have said "come a little closer, i cant hear you"

that was more along the lines of my friends reply when they ignored my polite way of handling it
