Thinking too much about a straight left arm is likely to introduce tension into the rest of your set-up and swing. If I really focus on a very straight left arm, I find I end up gripping the club too tight, which messes with the release.
A better way to think about it is to think about width in the swing. If you are maintaining a wide arc on the backswing, the arm will stay pretty straight as a result.
