You give a friend a 3 piece suite you were going to throw out (skip / charity shop) but after trying it in their house it didn't suit their room, so the've decided to try and sell it.

Who gets the cash ?

You - or at least should be offered the cash ?
Friend ?
50/50 ?

If I was the friend i'd be checking first to see if you wanted it back before selling or wanted any of the fee received.

It'd be common courtesy at least to ask.

Not you (IMHO). If I gave something away because I couldn't be bothered trying to sell it and I was going to bin it, then good luck to the friend who took it. I wouldn't expect to be offered anything either especially if they had come to pick the suite up in the first place. However, I wouldn't particularly want to hear them boasting about how much they got for it though as it might make me think again about giving anything away in the future.

Personally I would offer to put the money towards the bill next time I was out with that mate. No obligation on the person receiving the gift to do anything but common courtesy would suggest that he should offer it back.

If you give something away and then thats the end of it. If i wanted money i'd have sold it my self.

Agree with these.

The thing that would make me sceptical is that the reason for selling is 'they didn't think it suited the room'. Surely they knew what it looked like before it was given to them and I hope they're aware of what their room looks like.

I would give something to free to a friend for them to use said item; not to make a profit from it.

I agree. If I gave something to someone to maybe help them rather than sell it myself I would be rather miffed if they sold it rather than offered to give it back. Someone did this to me once, they wanted a laptop computer but couldn't afford one so I managed to get a redundant one from work that was in good nick. I was rather put out when I found they sold it the following week.

I woundnt really care.

You gave it to them. Theirs to decide what to do.

Im with the above for the reasons below

It was GIVEN away as it was going in the skip or charity shop probably did u a favour taking it ... saved u price of skip and bother of lumping it round the charity shop

In the eyes of the law, I would imagine it's now there's. They can keep the brass.

They get given nowt else though.

They should definitely offer you half the cash.

To offer nothing is highly disrespectful. It is given in the intention of being useful to them. not lining their pockets.
