Having been a member at both an open and a tree lined course I can only state by the club matches that the tree lined course won every time. The guys on an open course just think they can blast their driver every time and it doesn't work that way, the penalty is too high. A guy on a tree lined course fairs better on an open course as he can already control his ball. Of course there will be exceptions where someone just plays rubbish on the day :p

When you say open i suppose you mean links?

but what about gorse and heather, lucky to find it let alone play a shot, tree;s mostly air ;)

for the record, i am voting links.

the question really is who has the most transferable game and whos conditions are likely to impact the others game.

100% agree links may look open from the lack of trees, but the the corse and heather doesn't make it play open. Normally a lost ball or a 10 yard hack out.

Trees are easy in comparison protect you from the wind and you never know you might get a lucky bounce and make your par :D

Absolutely, I never heard of anyone bouncing out of a gorse bush or heather back onto the middle of the fairway like you can with trees.:)

If trees are easy in comparison you havent been in the right trees yet :).

As has been said, far too many vairiables, something as small as their normal shot shape could even make a huge difference.

But for what it's worth, I've grown up playing mainly parkland and heathland golf, with Parkland being my preference personally. However, my best ever round, and only ever round under par was on a links course.

if the lengths, and SSS, are similar then the only other factor is the greens - and this can be either a huge factor or none at all!

if both courses have undulating greens then, taking the above into account, there would be no fundamental advantage to either player.

what commonly occurs is that the links is a little longer, a little more open on most holes, and the greens are a little more undulating with firmer surrounds - the corollary applying to the parkland course with softer, more level surrounds to the flatter greens, but much tighter driving and more penal off the tee.

there's also the huge issue of whether the players have wider experience or have only ever played their type of course!

if it had to be a vote and assuming they don't have experience of the 'other side', I am with JO, the parkland guy will really appreciate the perceived openness of the links environment and will swing smooth and long and straight - the links guy will look at a hole (like the 10th at Blackmoor) and feel tight! (and we all know what happens next).

I voted links even though I play parkland. Assuming that links is gusty as a links course usually is, I'm assuming that the parkland course would be fairly even but the links course would defo favor the links player.

Not really a question that's easy to answer. The world no 1 does not win every week nor do Manchester United, factor in a bit of luck and you get a complete lottery. Not that I am prone to sitting on a fence. :ooo:

Links golfer, unless the parkland guy has his club is in greater Manchester. :)

Mid/High handicap then I reckon the links player mainly due to the shots variety of shots that can be required to play on a links track. Cat 1's then I'd say it would a pretty even match.

Links course can be as tight as any Parkland course, anyone playing Bogside as an example can testify. Anyone saying links courses are wide open clearly has little experience of links golf all year round.
