Joined a new club this year and now we're into the season decided to practice off the white tees in prep for comps (It's a totally different course off the back)- this upset the locals who told me I couldn't play off the whites unless in a comp - bizarre as every other club I've been at has allowed members to play off whites at any time. Is this normal or is my new club 'special'?!

Tell them to stick it, FFS some people cant just let others play their own game.

At my course you got 4 balls who play off red white and yellow in the same round.

Or just wait till the complainant is on teh yellows and whiff one past him off the whites...........only joking, DO NOT DO THIS.

Our white tee's are for competitions only.

Not everyone abides by this though, went down early evening last week as a single, as I got to the first tee another single guy arrives and asks if I am about to go, I said I wanted to have a few practice swings first, so you can go if you're ready.

He walks up to the white tee and hits 4 balls, spraying them all over....15 minutes later I'm stood on the yellows getting pretty hacked off while he is still wandering around looking for balls!

Not a problem at my place. Play off the whites or the yellows. I have to be honest and think that in 5 years or so membership I'vve probably played off the yellows about a dozen times. I prefer to try and take the course on off the full length

...tempting....! lucky they've never hosted a major - sorry chaps, can't go off whites till thursday so you'll have to practice from the ladies tees......

Seriously if any one can come up with a half decent reason for this i'd love to hear it

Play off the tees you want at 2 of the clubs i teach at and only off the Yellows (for men) at 2 others. As far as i know it's down to the individual club committees that decide.

You usually find that at the clubs that allow players to use any tee, the players themselves use the tee that they can enjoy the course the most from, so most players use the Yellow Markers, some use the Whites and very few go off the Blues. If i'm out playing myself, i'll play off a mix of tees depending on the wind or how i'm playing for different holes.

Maybe your new course is trying to keep the Medal Tees in good condition for competitions.

I thought only cat 1 players could play off the whites unless in a comp. Obviously wrong though. I might give it a blast next time i play

Some people have really strange ideas about golf in general.

Don't know why you say that. I have played several courses where only cat I players can use the white tees (unless in comps)

My old club's Whites were for Comps only.
At my new one it doesn't matter if you play white or yellow as there's only 88 yards difference over the 18 holes.

Whites are only for comps (incl knockouts obviously) at our club.

Be interesting to see if the condition of them would change if they were opened up for general play. i dont think they would change that much.

What is the justification for only using the whites? I just dont understand why you cant use a tee box unless you are a cat 1 player, therefore you cannot practice the course but only play it in a competition? :D

I know of two clubs where whites are competition only and two (inc my home club) where whites can be played any time.

It really depends on the individual clubs policy

I don't know why clubs make these rules, I was just saying some do.

I assume its to do with many factors:

Pace of play (differing lenghts of holes)
Space between tee times
Popularity of the course
Ability of the course to cope with traffic
People like making up silly rules
Rules are good according to golf clubs
Most golf clubs think they do not have sufficient numbers of rules
More comments about rules

The whites are used anytime at our course, but we also have blue championship tees which don't even get put out unless there's a big competition on.

Our blues are always out and I do not even think you need permission to play from them. I have done many times in practice rounds

Seems to be the correct answer,

and Bob my original statement was aimed at these rule makers.

We don't have yellow markers, just:

Reds (Ladies) Cse length 5,779 Yds
Whites (?? Never seen anybody use them) Cse length 6,421 Yds
Blues (Medal and Regular) Cse length 6,911 Yds
Blacks (Amateur Tournaments) Cse Length 7,503 Yds

Never seen anyone on the blacks either, but then, i'm not going to be playing in those tournaments anytime soon.
