Which would you prefer (low score or consistency?)

Hi Guys.

On saturday I shot an 80, not the lowest I've shot, that was a 76, BUT, I didn't take more than a 5 on any hole. 1st time ever this has happened :D and for me I believe this is my best ever round.

This got me thinking about my game. As much as I've enjoyed shooting sub 80's I don't think I've played as consistently and solidly as not to make a 6. Recent rounds I've shot an 80 but with an 8 + 6 on the card.

The nerves over the last few holes were as much as I've experienced shooting 79 and below but for different reasons. So the question is, is it better to shoot low and be up and down in your scoring, or be very consistent and make far fewer mistakes? For me it has to be mistake free and consistent golf.

What do you think?

John.

Consistency - because I believe that is all I need to start getting lower scores.

I'll take the low score every time. Couldnt give a monkeys how I played if I kept shooting low scores , something must be going right to shoot low though :D

It's all about the bottom number for me. Get it round in any way yo can and worry about how later. That said I do believe that a solid swing and a reliable short game go a long way to helping both consistancy and scoring. In matchplay I don't really give two hoots about the score against par as long as I keep getting it in the hole in one less than the opponent

I don't mind the odd "dodgy" looking shot if it gets the desired result, but I hate a round full of thinned chips even if it gets me a low score.

Low score any day

You 353 464 266 =39
Me 444 454 555 =40

Is the lowest score always the best?
In stroke play, you are beating me but in match play I'm one up :D

Thats fine Bob cos we've only played 9 holes and I cant see you getting many birdies cos you're too consistently average. I'll take my 4 birdies and 4 pars with a double thrown in , that should see you off nicely :D

Used to be a single-figure snob back in the day - every shot had to be right.

Sod that these days. Give me a low score any day of the week - don't care how it gets there.

Interesting thread.

I'd rather play to my h'cap with pars and bogeys than pars, bogeys and doubles or even triples!.....

But that's just me.....I'll still take any card if the total reads a good number.

I'll take a good score with the odd bad hole thrown in because it means I'm capable of going lower if I can string a round together without the bad 'un.

The doubles and trebles are mostly (in my experience) caused by poor course management, which is also easier to improve than honing the technique/swing.

I can understand the other point of view though. Each to their own.

Some interesting points and views coming up.

I still think I'd prefer 'mistake free golf', over the thrill of making birdies and seeing these being undone by doubles, triples and worse ruining a 'waht could have been round'.

It was nice to come off knowing that my score was the best it could have been and that for once I hadn't left any shots out on the course. I guess it shows more than anything an improvement in course management and shot selection.

John,

Perfect handicap round for me would be 6 pars and 12 bogies. Much rather have that than a couple of birdies and a matching pair of blobs....I could live with the birdies though.

;)
