Which hole do you prefer as your opener????

Our first is a Par 3 with water right, left and long. Walk off with a 4 and you are more than happy. Climb the steps to the 2nd which is another Par 3 with a 100 yard carry over the River Forth. Level 4's is a more than acceptable start.

I'm with Smiffy on this one, our 2nd is a par 3 and that's bad enough! Definitely prefer a par 4 to start with.

Our opener is a 353/360 yard par 4 SI 11, fairly straight forward provided you get your tee shot away ok, amazing the number of people that get snaffled up by the trees down the left though, usually those that take driver which is very high risk and unnecessary, a 4 0r 5 iron is long enough to make the corner and give a line to the flag.

Our 1st is a par 4 320mtr....
Its a slight dogleg right but is not a difficult opener...
Most will hit a driver off the tee but a 5 iron would put you at the 150 which is at the very end of a 2 tier fairway...Anything thats just a yard or 2 longer and your on a downslope with a tricky 2nd.

Now oue 2nd is a different animal...Its a 158mtr par 3 with a lake to carry and the wind is nearly always against meaning anything crom a 3 wood to a 5 iron is needed off it.

We have a nice gentle par 4, 325 yards ,to start with a ditch at 230 yards (Damn i was going to keep that quiet for the Meet ;))
Long iron, hybrid, 5 wood for the average hitter off the tee. Driver for all you long hitters will get you near the green. Second hole is similar length, so a gentle start. One of Harry Colt's course design ideas was to start this way. From then on course gets longer, although despite having 5 par threes the first one is not until the 6th.

Not good news if you get to start on the 10th though as it is the hardest hole, 440 yards, ob down the right, which is the way the prevailing wind blows. :(

I like ours just the way it is.
340/350yd par 4. Very slight dogleg left but not enough to make you do anything special with your tee shot. The trees left and right are new ones so no real trouble unless your unlucky enough to have one on your line or stopping you swinging.

Am i the only one who likes a tight opening hole? ;)... makes you think straight away :p

Yes you are ! I always think the worst hole to start on is a par 3, especially a tight short one. Once started a shotgun comp on our 12, stroke index 18, 125 yards, and hit my first ever shank on the hole. Hit a few more since. :( :( :( :( ;)

I think Smiffy has Ascots opening hole bang on. Off the white (228) it needs a full shot with a long club and so you put a commited swing on it. Off the yellows its only 160 ish and with a mid iron inyour hand there is always an element of "this is easy" and I often make a less than convincing swing and have made double or worse.

Wimbledon Common has a 230 yard par 3 opener with OB left and a big pile of course and rubbish right and that was always a hole you made 4 and got out quick irrespective of handicap. I prefer a gentle introduction, either a short par 4 or a par 5 as I think it lets you settle into a round rather than having to chase a score from the start especially if you play it badly

Driveable par 4! Gives the chance for the bigger hitters who have warmed a chance of getting it there. But you can take an iron for safety if you so wish.

That sums up our first. Ross Fisher drove it both rounds in the Selbourne Salver. The starter couldn't understand why he wasn't ready to tee off, until Fisher told him he was waiting for the green to clear. Probably just a 3 wood for some of the big hitters on here.

;)

I'd prefer a gentler intro, a straightish Par 4 would do, much like our 10th; trouble is that hole always plays long, no idea why.

what we have is a Par 5 dog-leg right round a lake. It's ruined no end of medals for a lot of people - more than a few double digits too. For most it's not a case of trying to take on too much trying to cut the corner, it's just that anything right all the way to the green is going to be wet.

ours is a par 4 306 yds plays downhill with a dog leg left oob left and right, trees on the left, its a nice opening hole not as hard as it seems not really a driver hole unless going for the green, i hit driver just to get a swing in because are 2nd is a tough drive.

Ours has a nasty opening hole, long par 4 which, at best, is a drive and long iron but can be a drive and fairway wood. The fairway slopes left to right so you have to hit it top left or the ball rolls down to the rough on the right and is blocked off from the green by large trees. There are also a couple of large trees to the left at normal driving distances so if you stray to far then you are left with little option other than to chip out. Oh and the fairway slopes steeply up to the front of the green so anything short stays short and the green has a couple of nasty turns based depending on pin position. It is a par 4 that I am always happy with a 5 on.

Told you I didn't like a par 3 as an opening hole
Bogied it both times yesterday

The other par 3 I double bogied once and parred the second time. So that's 4 points taken off of the 4 par 3's.
Crap
