Which clubs in the bag

Not the make but the set-up.

I'm always having second or even third thoughts about which clubs I have in the bag. I have tended to load the wedge end of the bag to give me plenty of choice around the green but I've been making a note of clubs used and I havn't touched my sandwedge for weeks. We don't have many bunkers and I don't often go in the ones we have.

I also feel that I'm sometimes missing out on a long club. The other day I had 210 to go on a par 5. Too far for my 3i but not far enough for my 4 wood. So I ended up short and had to chip and putt for my birdie (better for the putting stats!) but if the approach had found trouble I could have been looking at a 6 or more.

52, 56 and 60 wedges + putter

Toying with adding a 3 and 5 wood combo in place of the 4 wood and swapping 56 and 60 for a 58. But then I'm worried that if I do get in a bunker, will the bounce on the 58 be enough to get me out bearing in mind I don't like too much bounce for chips.

I know a few here have the 52/58 combo. Do you struggle from bunkers? This is my only concern with this set-up.

I carry Driver, 3 & 5 woods.
4-PW in my irons with a 50 & 56 degree wedge.
Adding a 3 hybrid for those "in betweenies" where a 4 iron isn't enough and a 5 wood is too much.
I would personally never carry 3 wedges. I would adapt my play around the two I carry.

How about replacing the 4 wood with the 3 and 5 as you suggested and simply take out the 60.
Job done.
56 degrees is plenty for most

I carry a 3 and 4 iron but to be honest I dont know why I bother as I never use the darned things, our course isn't short but even so a good drive away will leave nothing more than a 6 iron at most with the majority 7 and below. That's why I wont buy a hybrid, I'd never use it.The wedges at 52 and 56 give me all the versatility I need for any shot so no need to expand them as it only leads to confusion.

I recently (this week!) added a 3 wood as i only had a driver and a 2i hybrid (5 wood equivalent) and i have found that it was great.
I reached one par 5 in 2 unfortunately missed the eagle putt. I wouldn't have been able to have gotten close with my 5 wood so ditch the 4 and get a 3 and 5

It's not that I don't hit the 4 wood well, its that I feel there's a gap between it and the 3i - quite a large gap!

you may want to wait until you get those for sale on ebay before making too many changes

Like Bobmac says get rid of the 60 it isnt needed. Get a 56 with 10/12 degrees of bounce and use that for bunker shots and higher chips/pitches. Then you can load the top end with more choice.

I use driver , 3-wood and a 17 degree rescue and also have 3-pw in the irons. I use all those clubs at different times , I particularly like using the 3 iron off the tee and its nice hit a long lower shot into greens from a good fairway lie ( I use the hybrid for lighter/heavier rough)

I dont think i'll be changing the make up of my bag any time soon, fairly well covered all round.

They hybrid is 19 degree's and as mentioned is excellent in most lies, I still use the 3 iron sometimes, off the tee or from the fairway on occassion.

Wedge wise, I'm carrying the sand wedge which came with the mizuno's, plus my Vokey's (52 and 56), which i know in theory is 2 sand wedges. The mizuno is heavier and i use it in poorer lies from sand, especially if i want it to run out a bit. The vokey seems to get it up and down a little easier.

I wouldnt get any use out of a 60 degree. I dont have an 8 iron, as i lost it, so im bang on 14 still. New irons would prob mean me droping the 3i or the mizuno sand wedge.

I thought the idea was to have 3* - 4* between each club,

so the numbers don't look bad.

Is it that you hit your 4w too well, or you don't hit your 3i well enough ?

What if you change your 3i to a hybrid?

Ah. Confusion here..

3i is a hybrid not a 3 iron - havn't hit on of those well for years!

I suppose I do hit the 4 wood too well. Apparently its becoming more popular to have a 4 wood - you're supposed to be able to hit it as well or better than a 3 wood.
Could just bring in a 2i hybrid - 18 degrees or so. Won't go as far a the 4 wood but further than the 3i.

Personally, I'd not bother carrying two hybrids just 3 degrees out, I take the "longer" one and learned to hit it 10 yards less.

I have (and use) 1/3/5 woods as the "old" days.

I then have either
3 iron or 3 rescue (depending)
4 iron (super G.I. Callaway) or a 9 wood!!!

Then
5-PW and choice of 3 wedges.



I really like using my proper 3 iron, but if I carry it, I don't hit it off poor lies - I use it off the tees mainly.

I'd think about dropping both your 56 and 60 and splitting the difference with a 58. I find I get the best of both worlds in terms of bunker shots and high shots with an open face if I need it. My bag is probably top heavy with a 3 and 5 wood plus a 3 hybrid and I do tend to take the 5 wood out in summer and put in a 56 and 60 degree wedge to combat the thiker greenside rough and firmer greens
