Where to leave bunker rakes?

Once you have had a ball stopped near the lip of a bunker by a rake meaning you have no shot to the green and have to come out backwards you will prefer rakes outside of bunkers.

At my club we have rakes with the head held up on little stands. These are great but you still get people who chuck the rakes in bunkers.

Ken, I cannot remember which course it was that I played but they too had stands to put the rakes on. With that there was then no argument re where the club wants the rakes to go. It was one of those little things that you notice at a course that went down well.

Yes, I noticed these these little props when playing Dunbar and they work really well. I wish more clubs (including mine) would adopt them.

As is obvious, there are many different opinions with advantages and disadvantages to all. Just placing it sensibly is key, depending on the type of bunker and surrounds. For example I've seen rakes placed over the edge of a pot bunker such that a ball could stick high up the side or back of the bunker making the next shot almost impossible. Also, the little stands by the edge of bunkers can force the head of the rake to be quite close to the back lip and maybe prevent the ball ending up in the flat part. All just rub of the green ultimately though. Common sense should mean it's pretty much a non-issue 99% of the time.

Leeds Castle golf course has pop up rakes mounted in the ground, so when not in use there is nothing to cause obstruction, you press the top of the rake and out its comes being on a spring loaded device. My course says to leave rakes in the bunker. I have no qualms with that, as the bunker is a hazard. If a ball is deflected whilst in the hazard, thats just tough. But it's better that than risk possible defelction into a hazard.

I cannot believe we are debating this again, is it groundhog day?
Thankful that none of my playing partners are so obsessed with the minutia of what should be an enjoyable pastime.
Do what you like delc please.

If you actually see and watch your ball deflect into a bunker off a rake, you either knobbed it or it was a crap shot anyway :smirk:

A defined club policy on where to put a rake..... and people wonder why golf is seen as a game with too many rules..

Yup that was me at Wollaton the other week, hit me ball on a par three and for 1/10th of a second it disappeared into the bunker. Then boing it flew out 90 degrees right. It had hit the rake, result. Unfortunately my second shot ended up in the same bunker.

Unless there's a bloke waiting to hand me a rake as I approach the bunker I couldn't give a toss where it is or where I leave it. Rake n chuck back in. Or hand to said bloke to do for me

Literally the most pointless discussion thread. I've seen policy documents at clubs with say they should be placed at a certain point. And they never see that point after the first golfer goes in a bunker

I don't care where they are I just wish everyone would use them to rake the bunkers. Am sick of the lazy gits who don't:sbox:

Firmly in the leave it out of the bunker brigade after today. someone raked the bunker and tossed the rake back in. It bounced on landing then came to rest. My ball rolled into its landing creator. Lovely man made plugged ball.

I know this is an old thread but this is just all wrong, leave it in the lowest part of the bunker or at worst case leave it where you would think if your ball happened to go near it where you wouldn't be worst penalised if you had to move the rake to play your shot.
