Where does it all go wrong??

Grudgingly I blew all my lunch money and got my son an appropriate sized US Kids golf set. I had initially bought him a larger set hoping that the will 'grown into it' but that seems to be a longer process than I thought. So anyways, yesterday off we went to the range for his classes.

As it was raining, we had to stay in the teaching bays rather than get on the course. I thought he was having an ok session, though he hit many to the right as he was not able to square the club in time. The pro mentioned that he does not have the strength yet to pull the club thru and so his hands get ahead of him. He said this is normal and as he gets more strength it will work out fine.

Till that point, I was watching him from the side and could see his faults. Then the pro shot a swing sequence video from the back i.e. looking down the range. He then played it back and showed me his swing plane. The pro had drawn a line across to show the swing plane on the video. I must say that he was rather shocked/surprised to see that nipper takeaway and the swing was almost textbook perfect!!! While the results may be not so good, the plane was spot on. He struggles with his footwork sequence as he adjusts to heaving that club. Otherwise there was nothing wrong with it.

Our teaching bays have large viewing bays and I had not realised that there were a couple of people standing there for about 10 mins watching him go thru the motions. We briefly exchanged a 'we like what we are seeing' glances and one of them mentioned 'he is a killer'. Last time someone told me that was when i duck hooked my ball off the first into the 3rd tee.

While I am a bit biased, I am sure there are hundreds of kids up and down this country currently swinging sweetly, yet we dont get the same output when they are near the 20s. I am sure Mrs will also get nipper to focus on his A-levels, become an Engg or a medico like the rest of the family or the neighbours etc. But I dont think education should be blamed for it, as education is very important.

So where does it all go wrong? We have the most number of clubs/courses than many countries put together. So why dont we have 8 of the top 10 in the EU from the UK?

I don't think it does go wrong to be honest..

England have 9 of the top 20 EU golfers at the minute and it was only 4 years ago we held 1st and 2nd in the world with Donald and Westwood.

USA has about 7.5 times the amount of golf clubs as England and a population nearly 6 times as big - it's not surprising they have so many in the worlds top 20. I think England have done pretty well in recent years when you consider the numbers and averages

I'm with Grieve14. We punch above our weight. Watch any European tournament and se how many Brits are playing. Pretty high number. Don't be down, we do well at golf

Pushy parents?
amen, all he wants to do is play pokemon & vkrup has the poor fella down the range all half term.

I took my two down the club. They terrorized the ladies roll up (good lads), had hot chocolate & beans on toast and decided golf was boring :D

im with these guys why should we have 8/10 top players. The set up is getting better in the UK for the transistion from grass roots to top level in all sports but we have not given right to expect top notch sportsmen and women in any sport.

Does it go wrong? It goes right often enough to say that it's not going wrong. Sometimes it takes a while (Rose, Clarke), other times it happens quickly (McIlroy) but really, it looks to me like it's in good shape. This time last year I thought there was a void to be filled as Poulter, Westwood, GMac etc. started to wind down but then along comes Willet, Fitzpatrick, Wood, Sullivan etc. Sometimes sentimentality for those that have been there for a while gets in the way of seeing what could be around the corner. I accept participation at my level is not good, but I don't think it's going wrong at the elite level.

I don't think we push him... It is all based on reward system.. he wanted to go to the range with Daddy as we could not get on the bike as it was pissing down.
At our place, the only thing that is restricted is access to electronic toys. The only time he is likely to get it is during long drive (so he will shut up) or if he is really good at his tasks. While he will get sucked into e-toys at some point, we want him to learn a life skill called 'talking to people'
Back to golf, my neighbours son was apparently very good and a single HC till women and drink got in the way. Now at the age of 40 he is yet to get back to golf..

Pushy parents wanting their child to be the next Rory. Failing that many will discover women and beer and golf will seem less appealing. If I was the OP, keep doing what you're doing as he's outdriving "Brian" and seems to be having fun. He clearly has an aptitiude (unlike father :rofl: )so as he get's bigger he'll get better and better
