Tried to arrange an appointment at my local Doctors practice. I am told that it's not possible to make a future appointment, I will have to call in each day at 8:0 am and try to make one. It was never like this, you could always ring in and arrange a future appointment. No wonder ANE is getting over used!

My missus doctors used to be like this. Your rung at anything after 8:05am and then it was always booked up as well! It would be easier to qualify as a doctor yourself than get an appointment!

She has moved now thankfully.

Never a problem getting an appointment where I live.
Very good GP service.

Nearly had to use it yesterday when the Ramsay ladder tried it's best to take the top of my finger off.
See those two minutes holding it under the cold water tap, felt like two hours.

That is a ridiculous situation!

Ours is the same, you have to book two weeks in advance if you want to be ill, or take an 'emergency' sit and wait on the day if your early/lucky enough to get one. The receptionists are frustrated doctors as well, they start trying to triage you over the phone. One of them got the right hump with me when I questioned her medical training. I would happily move but the kids GP is excellent, assuming we can actually get to see her!

That's how it is on most camps in the RAF - appointments made in the morning - think some are changing

There must be a reason why they have changed to booking on the day ? Have they have a lot of people not turn up for appointments after booking weeks in advance ?

how the OP mentions is how my quacks has worked for ages, never once have we not got to see the doc the same day. OK sometimes you may have to wait an hour, but hey.

Scheduling a non emergency appointment is a nightmare and nigh on impossible though!!

Hee hee, i feel your pain, that is after getting past the "whats wrong with you" interrogation from recepetionists on phone..:)

Best thing to ever happen to my GP's was moving to daily appointments.

Used to phone up for an appointment and normally had a 5 day wait minimum, now phone in the morning and get am appointment same day every time, if the doc wants to see you gain then you can book in advance.

Problem is people have jobs and need to organise their lives, they cant just take a day off unscheduled.

If you want to make an appointment at our doctors there is a 2 week waiting list!!!!

However, if it is an emergency you can ring up at 8.30am to make a same ay appointment.

and if you are that desperate to see a doc, surely you are not well enough to be working?

That is always possible,

I do understand the frustration with this kind of booking system however when you have a chest infection and cannot get to see a doctor for a week surely that is just simply no good. In the case of booking appointments in advance too many people simply make an appointment and do not bother canceling causing wasted time for the GP's.

I think we had something like 1 in 5 appointments missed at my GP's with eight min appointments on advanced booking, that is about twelve missed appointments a day or over one and a half hours wasted time for each GP.

It never ceases to amaze how this can physically happen.......how can they take enough calls to fill up a whole day in 5 minutes..? It' much like this at mine - fortunately I rarely go...

If I need an appointment that day because I'm ill and I'm told they have no more I just say "I'm ill, I will see you in 15 minutes" and just turn up. THEY CANNOT TURN YOU AWAY.

Guys a good option is nhs 111 service. If you can convince them on the phone that you need to be seen by a doctor. The. They can book you in the same afternoon. Apparently each gp must keep a slot for 111 calls.

Used it twice and was seen the same day on both occasions

Our local GP's fund a 'Doctors on Call' out of hours service which is very good.
After speaking to you they will either do a house visit or you can drive to the local A&E where they are based.
