Fellow Members whom arrive by car and most occasions spend a few hours in the Bar after a game and then preceed to drive home?

Inexcusable, And I wouldn't hesitate in A) telling them and B) Telling the Police.

And if anybody ever disagreed, I would ask them how they would feel if the car they hit, was carrying their family in.

OOOps actually missed the O.Ps question, I am unsure on the clubs policy, but I would hope it resembles the above.

No policy......some folk are past talking to about drinking and driving.....if the club took a line, there'd be less members....

I don't think the club have a policy per se but I have known our steward and stewardess both take keys of members to stop them driving home. I think sadly its something most clubs turn a blind eye too and leaves to the discretion of the member.

In an ideal world members should tell each other and the police but I think in reality if you got a reputation for grassing over the limit drivers to the police you'd soon find yourself persona non gratis

I'm not condoning their actions for one moment but I'm just being a realist

Not in a club yet, so can't answer the policy bit. Nor would I expect a club to have a policy. But... am looking for a club and one of the big criteria is; how easy is it to get to & from without a car? Wouldn't be a problem if all joining meant was playing golf, But would want to join in the social side & have a few bevvies on occasion - and not have to worry about driving home

I don't think the club should need to have a policy. Its the same problem that Country pubs have. You've got to drive to get there so if you're going to have a beer or 2 you're setting yourself up.
What's the answer?
There isn't one. We all know D+D is wrong. We've probably all done it - knowingly or not.
The bar is there to make money. Why should they take the can if a member is caught? Is it not the responsibility of the drinker to ensure they are fit to drive home?

In this country we have a blame culture - someone else is always to blame. Its time we all started to take more responsibility for our actions. If you don't want to get caught D+D then don't drink. Simples...

I think turning a blind eye is the modern way of the world and its so wrong. If you turn a blind eye to a drink driver who then kills someone or maims someones kids you then become partly RESPONSIBLE for that death or serious injury simply because you failed to do anything to stop it when you had the chance. :(

Everyone can live in the clouds on this one if they wish, I won't, if I think you are over the limit and I see you about to drive, I will try to stop you and if that fails, I will call the cops without the slightest hesitation .

If that makes me 'not fit in' or 'alienated' I really dont give a stuff , I would rather have a clear concience :D.

A teenager who takes a knife out with him every night is less likely to use it than a one-day of the week drink driver is to crash, but I would bet if any of you had teenage sons and saw them with a knife that you would do something about it pronto! :o

Drink drivers? TURN EM IN! ;)

I can't agree with the holier than thou stance. I bet every forum member has broken the law (speeding DD etc). Whats the difference between driving 5mph too fast in a built up area and potentially killing a kid who runs out and the guy having two pints in the bar and driving home. Are you going to report all speeding motorists too.

Both are against the law so why discriminate. I'm pretty sure though if you did report DD drivers or made a big issue directly with members leaving after a drink you'd not have many partners to play with and playing lots of solo rounds. You can't pick and choose which laws to break

Homer, working where you do I would suspect you know the difference between normal behavior and behavior under influence of drink/drugs etc. :D

Speeding is a factor depending on the cause and often has no relationship to the causation or end result, speed as opposed to speeding is more relevant.

DRINK DRIVING IS A CAUSE!

Every sober person can make mistakes when using the roads, but someone in drink or drugs is incapable of exacting or even rational behavior which leads to crashes.

I am not being holier than thou, I am giving balance/logic and sense, drink drivers never see sense, its up to the sober to do something about them.

In addition, I personally would not be upset at losing a few immature drink drivers as playing partners, Im a big boy, I only have real friends, not social drink or be dammed cliques. :D

Having seen first hand the devastation caused by a driver (sober and drug free) doing 47 in a 30 mph when a young child runs out I have to disagree about speeding being a factor and not a cause.

A speeding motorist is as much a ticking timebomb as a drunk or drugged driver. There is no difference. There are probably more speeders than DD but because the law is targeting the DD and reliant on speed cameras and roadside vigils to do so most drivers continue to speed knowing for the most part in their locality where the cameras are and where police set up mobile patrols.

I'm pretty sure the statistics show that death by DD is actually falling whilst death by speeding (and neglience) is on the rise. I'm not going to go into the ins and outs but I just think you can't lay everything at the DD door without looking at habitual speeders. I've seen the effect and devastation personally.

I think we'll have to agree to disagree on this one.

Don think our club has a policy on it, personally i have a pint and a half of guiness ,but i no of the bar staff taking peoples key from them which i totally agree on.Its not worth it in todays financial climate if i lost my license i couldnt work its as simple as that.

Im not going to get into this one Homer, I know this subject far better than most as I have lived it for many years and I just cant be bothered, Im too tired because it is way too complex and too deep for the average road user to fully understand which is why the simplistic is often used to place things in the mind of joe public.

Goodnight.

Homer I have to say, people dont report speeders because its almost impossible to Police. And how can you prove they were speeding? Speeding is not condoned, nor is it thought of any less illegal or wreckless than DD, well not in my book anyway.

The thing with DD is it is easy to Police, if I saw you enter your car after 4 beers, by the time the police catch up with you, you will still have had 4 beers and so they wll be able to prove that you are breaking the law.

Speeders, you see them breaking the law, call the Police, and when they eventually catch up with them, 9/10 they wont be speeding so they cannot do a thing about it, and thats why people dont report it.

I say REPORT them, they should know better. I've seen it many a time, guys leaving the club house worse for wear and driving. The bar staff dont take keys off these guys but they have been known to try at times.

I've never known any club I've been at or visited who have reported any of their members, or visitors. Thing is, as has been pointed out earlier, whether its a pub, club, restaurant & golf club, they want custom & their buisinesses involve selling alcohol amoungst other services & I doubt most establishments are that bothered. That said if I were behind the bar & I considered someone had had a lot more than was comfortable seeing them consume I'd be very tempted to report them, especially if a repeat offender. Or at least make sure that someone in their party took resonsibility for making sure that person didn't plan on getting behind the wheel.

I'm not sure what the current drink limit is these days, but I'm betting even a full pint would put most over the official DD limit. or at least very close to it, depending on the strength of the concoction.

Simple answer is not to have anything at all when out. As a nation we are now consuming far less alcohol when out & know that we may be put in a situation where we may need to get behind the wheel. The knock on effect though is that as a nation our resistance to the effects of alcohol also reduces too, because we are no-longer used to consuming it.

Yes people should take responsibility for their own actions, however I do think if certain establishments wish to continue trading & improve their bar profits, they'd do well to start laying on a minibus service for members/customers. To make sure their customers are not tempted to drive home when they've had something to drink.

Golf clubs & pubs & restaurants should also take responsibility for the fact they sell the alcohol that could potentially be a factor in someone having an accident.

As for the subject of speeding, as has been pointed out its a very complicated issue & not one the government or governing bodies are really handling well & not a subect I really want to get involved in discussing as its Off Topic to the subject in hand.

Your wasting your time calling police regarding speeding. They cannot and will not do anything unless they witness \ cathc you themselves. Thats the law so save yourself the hassle and stop wasting the call centres time.

The original post, why should a club have a policy? We are all adults and know the law. Order a fast black and be done with it.

HNJ, care to elaborate on your better knowledge of the subject? Are you a traffic cop fighting the problem face on?

Andy

This is tosh.

Most stats on dd include teenagers driving while out of their heads. This scews the stats.

Recent research shows driving while on hands free telephones is 4 times more likely to cause an accident than dd. Why the witch hunt?

I don't condone dd, but I don't see why 2 beers gets you a mandatory 15 month ban, yet kill someone on hands free gets zip.
