whats the rush?

what is it with golfers who want to get their round over and done with as fast as they can?
i personally look forward to my golf getting out there and having some me time.
i am not a slow player holding anyone up but i hear these people, all raring to go and set a new time record for getting round.
are you one of these guys ? if so why?

I second that. Never sure why so many people are in such a rush. Personally I quite enjoy it if the play is a bit slow as it allows me to take my time. Your out there to try and play well and it takes as long as it takes.
I've played in a few games where I feel out of breath at points because we are running around to make good time and I really don't get the point.

I like to play pretty quickly. It isn't necessarily about the actual time the round takes. I like to walk quickly, as in my view, every one has a natural pace which it is comfortable to walk at. Mine just happens to be pretty quick. I also don't take much time over the ball.

I don't like standing about waiting to play shots. I play better if I can just walk up and hit it.

Most of the 4 hours or so I spend on the golf course are not playing golf. Most of them are spent doing something I hate. Waiting. 4 and 1/2 hours spent playing golf is not more golf, it is more waiting.

I am not asking for any one else to rush round, but I can look at the trees, listen to the birds, what ever as I walk to my ball. I don't need to spend 10 minutes standing on the next tee doing it.

As with Murph', I play at my own pace, which is quite brisk.

I don't rush by any stretch of the imagination, but when I come up behind a slower moving group it does mess with my game a little.

As I've said to my playing partners before. I don't mind people playing at a slower pace than me, so long as they aren't zigg-zagging across the course. If this was the case and they were holding up play I would expect to be let through.

I agree with play your own pace. I'm not a fast walker by nature. Just go a nice steady pace. I have a pre-shot set up I go though every shot. Which takes 45-50 sec's.If you want to play though you can. But thats my speed and thats how it stays. Funny enough if someone in the group trys to make me play faster. It often takes longer as I will hit more bad shot from rushing.

If you want to play slowly the fine. Just get out of the way when faster groups come along rather than being a tit and forcing them to play at your pace.

People play at different speeds. I prefer to get round quickly. The issues/arguments around speed of play are effectively down to the fact that slow players are unafected by the speed of players like me but conversely, my round is adversely affected by people who play slowly. It is difficult to find a solution that will suit both types of golfer in my view.

And I don't mind if anyone takes 50 seconds plus to go through a pre-shot routine (although I would strongly question the value of such a process) as long as you are doing it whilst others are playing so that when it is your turn to play, you are ready to swing the club rather than ready to start your pre-shot routine.

That's the attitude which pretty much says everything in relation to this particular issue.

I suggest you digest the following from the R&A from the Etiquette section of the Rules of Golf.

Play at a Good Pace and Keep Up You should always play at a good pace. The committee may establish pace of play guidelines that all players should follow. It's a group’s responsibility to keep up with the group in front. If they lose a clear hole and delay the group behind, they should invite the group behind to play through, irrespective of the number of players in that group. Where a group has not lost a clear hole, but it is apparent that the group behind can play faster, they should also invite the faster moving group to overtake them.


I have highlighted the appropriate section in italics for those who will be tempted to read only the section related to having lost a hole.

If I wanted to run round on a Sunday morning I would go jogging. I like a reasonable paced game, keeping up with the group in front, but not to feel that I have to rush my shots cos the group behind are pushing up as close as possible. If we lose a hole to the group in front then we WILL call them through.

Just timed my pre-shot etc. Did say it was 45-50secs. But it is 15-20secs. Funny it feels longer. Oh even though I said I walk at my own steady pace. I have always keep up with the group infront. But if your in the group behind that likes to run everywhere. You may play though with pleasure. Because contary to what has been said, fast players put me off my game the same as very slow players put the fast players off.

Do you mean you have played with the attitude that Jonny highlighted in italics or your original statement? I can't quite work it out.

For what it is worth, if I am in a group that is in any way, shape or form holding the guys behind me up then at the ealiest convenience, I go and have a chat with them and offer to let them through. This is totally irrespective of what is going on in front of my game as this is irrelevant.

If it is a busy day or a competition then the gentlemen behind will already know that the course is full and going through would not be very fruitful so invariably they decline but at the same time, they greatly appreciate the courteous offer.

There is a huge disparity in what is deemed a suitable time to play a round of golf. Unfortunately there will never be a reasoned answer that is acceptable to everyone. We'll just have to live with it I'm afraid.

As has been said, be ready to play your shot when it is your turn, walk smartly to your ball, don't dither when coming off the green and it'll make things a lot easier.

DAve Couldn't agree more, I just play at my normal pace but when you got nowhere to go in front but the group behind are pushing right up yer rear there is nothing worse, you end up looking over your shoulder all the time, rushing shots, even go to them and explain there is no where to go. Total off put, probably more so than a slow group in front. At least you can see them and slow you pace slightly to prevent waiting times.

I do not rush but there is a difference between being held up and rushing. I am not a fast driver but I still get frustrated when I am stuck behind a tractor on a country lane.

Speeding up play is not about rushing but rather about removing the pointless actions that hold up everyones round.

Me thinks you need to have a bit of re-education. The pace of the group you are in is your collective responsibility. If you are holding people up you should let themv through. It then becomes the responsibility of the group originally in front of you to determine if they are then holding up the group you've just let through.

Sounds like you're one of the increasing number of players who use the excuse of the group behind have no where to go if we let them through so stuff them...
