over the last three months my game has clicked into place and have shaved 6 shots off my handicap, with more on the way. up til now ive been using any old golf balls that i find in the various lakes and ponds of my home club, and it has been suggested to me to start using new ones, but with all the different brands i dont know which ball to go for. I am looking for a ball that would provide plenty of control around the green, but not at the cost of a cover that will rip up after a few chips. is there anybody who would be able to help?

I cannot recommend the Wilson DX2 soft ball enough, they are very reasonably priced and they have good all around performance and they are soft so they feel as good as the top balls. I recently bought 5 doz for £50.00 from online golf a bargain for a good ball. They have sold out of them and a newer version is on the market. Give one a bash I am sure you will like them.

I say Dx3. Even better than the Dx2 which I play most of the year, except when the course is rock hard.
I've tried AD333, Soft Feel (green) DX2/3/4, Callaway diablo, Nike One vapor, Titleist NXT tour and extreme.
All these have been bought in boxes of 12, sometimes more than once. Anything else I've used (excluding some ProVs) has been just a sleeve of 3.

The Dx3 seems to pip them all (compared to other balls £10-£20)
The AD333 is great (I like putting with it too!) but has been frustrating me lately.
The NXT tour is good but expensive. The Nike is LONG.
My favourite ball is the Z-star but I'm not good enough (I feel) to warrant the cost.

My advice would be to look at a number of the recent ball threads as this has been a recurring theme lately. Everyone seems to have their own preferrences and so I guess it'll come down to budget, how many you lose (or are prepared to lose) per round and what characteristics you are after.

Do you notice any difference in the different brands of balls you have been playing with?

If any of them stand out as a nice ball to play with for you, I'd go with that.

srixon Z stars are good but theres nothin better than opening a brand new pack of Prov 1S and placing on the tee!! Fills me with confidence every time!!
