What's the format of your club championship?

Can't see the problem with 36 holes strokeplay off scratch - most clubs adopt this format. If you're a member - you qualify! simple.
Club champion has the best score - handicap categories are also awarded for each section. In the end, there can only be one champion - this is the easiest way to see who is the best.

This is what we do at our club for the club championships^

But we also have another competion that is an 18 hole scratch qualifier, and then the top 16 players play 18 hole match play KO. The match play is spread out over the summer months.

Sounds good, but since we already have 3 big stroke play competitions, my club wanted to have the club champion with a match play.

We currently have the first category players (hcp 0-12) divided into 2 sub categories: 0-6 playes brutto match play, while 6 to 12 play net match play. I think everyone in the first category should play brutto, but this obviously put a low hcp player in advantage against a 11 hcp.... what a mess! Do you have a solution? :D

No I don't, but as stated the 36 holes off scratch seems to be the most widely adopted format. As for advantage, well - somebody has to be better than the rest and this includes handicap. If everyone starts off a level playing field such as scratch, then the player with the best ability (regardless of handicap) should win. But it sometimes throws up surprises too.

Sounds fair! Will propose some of the solutions to my club, let's see how it goes!

Thanks everyone!

No obvious solution to this one I'm afraid. Perhaps if you already have three big stroke play competitions and want a matchplay then maybe try a group style format with seedings based on handicap, eg:

Group 1 - Seed 1, Seed 12, Seed 5,
Group 2 - Seed 2, Seed 11, Seed 6,
Group 3 - Seed 3, Seed 10, Seed 7,
Group 4 - Seed 4, Seed 9, Seed 8,

Semi final 1 - Winner of Group 1 vs Winner of Group 4
Semi final 2 - Winner of Group 2 vs Winner of Group 3

Sorry I don't understand, the winner of each group will be chosen with a strokeplay among 3 people?

36 holes medal over a Saturday and Sunday. Open to anyone with an active handicap and having played three qualifiers in a rolling twelve month period. Halfway cut after 18 holes on Saturday which usually gets the banter going wondering who is and isn't playing Sunday. The second round goes out in reverse score order so the best gross scores from round one go out last. Two prizes on offer. The scratch prize for best gross score over 36 holes and a net prize. There's only prize in my mind though and that's the gross one although I did say if I ever won the net prize I'd dive into the pond by the 18th

Ours is this Saturday, men and women play it on the same day but have different competitions, both are 36 holes gross scores.

Interestingly (or not) the men were trying to split it over 2 days but it has stayed on the same day for now at least.

At ours its 36 hole scratch medal with a prize also for the best handicap score , played in handicap order then its top 16 scratch scores going forward to play scratch matchplay Knockout 18 holes with final over 36 holes , I won this format at my old club where it was top 16 in May sat medal and top 16 in Sun medal going forward as 32 to play handicap matchplay knockout over 18 holes with the final over 36 holes

54 hole scratch medal - 18 holes on the Saturday, cut after the 1st round, then 36 holes on the Sunday - makes a weekend of it, the club was packed all weekend.

Only a few will enter that , a young few and non family man , as for the rest they wont bother because everyone knows only a few have a chance of winning a scratch event , even if there was a handicap part it would not be a big entry

36 hole stroke play over two days with a cut. Prizes for top 6 in gross and nett.
Used to be over one day but they have changed that because they keep getting fully subscribed!

Personally I love the sound of a shootout but not sure it would go down well as Club Champs. We have an 18 hole one at our place and it is great fun.

There is a handicap competition too, so plenty for all abilities to play for - we had 140 entrants this year.

Ours is two rounds of 18hole strokeplay to qualify for a last 8 matchplay (unseeded). The club champ is the one who wins at the end of the matchplay.

We play in categories (0-12 is A section, 13-18 is B and 19+ is C) for the matchplay and have a winner of each, but of course the A section winner is the club champ.

To qualify for the matchplay, it's the top 8 gross scores but for the A section, that is based on the combined 36 hole total and for Sections B&C it's the best score of the two qualifying strokeplay rounds.

Four rounds on golf over the summer months on elected Saturdays, best three to count. We do two Club Champion Comps - Best Nett and Best Gross. You are not allowed to win both. I do not agree with this. Should you win both you can only pick which title you want. Everyone in this postion picks gross as it has the highest esteem.
In my view the person who gets Best Nett in this situation is first loser.

I feel the competition is devalued in this situation.

Interesting reading here and in the other thread at
http://forums.golf-monthly.co.uk/sh...ub-Championship&highlight=championship+format

Perhaps I'm old school, but, I see the Club Championship as the pinnacle of the golfing season. The honour of being the Club Champion alone should be making all red blooded golfers want to play in the event and to try their utmost to do well. Granted, the lower handicap players are most likely to do well, certainly at my own club, the Champion will most likely be in the 0-4 handicap range most years. We do have sections for handicap players, but, in reality, everyone wants to try and qualify for the main Championship, the scratch event, and to try and win that event.

In our area the traditional way to play is two qualifying rounds then top 8 or 16 into matchplay stage which are played over the following week and Finals Day at the end of the week. All you need is to peek for that week and you can have a great time. If you get to the matchplay stage, it's a whole new ball game and anything can happen. There are usually shocks and strange results in the early rounds, but the cream always rises to the top and on Finals day, there are two guys fighting tooth and nail to win the title of Club Champion.

Some of the comments on this thread make me wonder if people actually understand just what your Club Championship is about, it's not just another weekend event, it is The Event of the year. Support your Club Championship event, enter and play your heart out, you just never know what might happen.
