Hello everyone,

in my golf club we are having a bit of an issue since during the last 3 years we have tried to find a tournament format that works to elect the club champion but every year there are some problems....

We have tried with the "free admission" so that you go and sign yourself for the competition, but this ended up in a lot of people WD before the match play and so instead of like 4 matches, you arrive in the final after winning only 2 or even 1.

About the qualification, how do you qualify? We have tried with the qualifications only during a specific month (ie September if the match plays start in October), and we have tried with the sum of the results only during the 4 most important competition of the year.

Also, about the categories, we have 3 net categories (0-12, 12-25, 25-36 hcp) and 1 brutto, plus we also have ladies category. How do you divide the categories? Ladies have only a net tournament or also a brutto one?

This year we were not able to find a solution, so a member of the board ended up with a sort of emergency solution: you qualify during the competition of September, then the 10 best players do a 9 holes shotout.... this actually sucks, so I am asking you guys so that for the next year we can find a better solution :)

(sorry if my explanation is quite confused...)

Thanks
iMak

we qualify best 2 rounds out of 3 chosen medals in April and May, top 16 play 1 round on Finals Saturday then top 2 play matchplay final on the Sunday.

Last club had best 2 scores out of 3 comps then a finals weekend with 18 on Saturday and 18 on Sunday all strokeplay, so effectively a 72 hole strokeplay scratch and handicap comp as the handicap club champion was also in this.

Can't see the problem with 36 holes strokeplay off scratch - most clubs adopt this format. If you're a member - you qualify! simple.
Club champion has the best score - handicap categories are also awarded for each section. In the end, there can only be one champion - this is the easiest way to see who is the best.

Here's a recent post on your question: http://forums.golf-monthly.co.uk/sh...ub-Championship&highlight=championship+format

Personally I prefer 36 hole strokeplay formats with prizes for gross and the handicap categories.

The Club Champion is decided by the aggregate of the six lowest scratch medal scores recorded in qualifiying competitions held between the opening competition of the season (Lifeboat Competition) and the closing competition (Police Competition).

It seems to have been won by the same fella for 8 out of the last 10 years.....

Thanks for the reply guys!

So basically in UK/Ireland the majority elects the club champion after a match play, just stroke play? I guess you learn something every day! :)

Club champs is 36 hole stroke play - winner is best gross over the two rounds

Also a HC champ

2 rounds medal, one on Saturday, then on Sunday in reverse order (leaders off last - of which I was one :)), gross prize for champion, and a best net & junior prizes as well.

Anyone with an active handicap who has played 3 (I think) club qualifiers in the previous 12 months can enter and it's played over two rounds (Saturday and Sunday). After round 1 there is a cut. There is a scratch winner which is the only one that counts IMHO and a Nett Prize (I think the club call it the handicap Club Champion but I'm not having that). We have very few Cat 1 players so without the Nett prize there wouldn't be many entries. The same guy has won it the last 2 years so I'm hoping it will be a new name this year (sadly that won't be me). I have nothing against the current champion, he's an ex-pro and a good guy, but it would be nice to see a different name win it.

Other question, do you think making a "net" match play makes sense or match play competitions must be brutto only?

Nothing wrong with having the nett competition as matchplay format, however this obviously involves more time commitment from the players than a one off strokeplay event, so you're unlikely to get as many entries.

The other bonus of strokeplay formats is that everybody involved is there on the day, so you get a nice atmosphere, a good day behind the bar and a bit of a crowd watching those in contention up the 18th.

Ours is four rounds of scratch strokeplay, open to all members. First two rounds played Saturday and Sunday one week, last two the next weekend. We have a halfway cut so after two rounds the top 30 and ties (scratch) make the last two rounds. The last two rounds are played in groups of three, with the highest scores going first and the leaders in the last group, re-drawn after the third round.

There is a combined net competition for the first two rounds, and a separate net for the last two, to get everyone on the course something to play for, but the word champion is only used for the overall scratch winner over the four rounds.

Sounds good, but since we already have 3 big stroke play competitions, my club wanted to have the club champion with a match play.

We currently have the first category players (hcp 0-12) divided into 2 sub categories: 0-6 playes brutto match play, while 6 to 12 play net match play. I think everyone in the first category should play brutto, but this obviously put a low hcp player in advantage against a 11 hcp.... what a mess! Do you have a solution? :D

mothly medal winners, then any non qualifiers under 10hc are invited. 36 hole medal off scratch to determine the winner. played over a wekend, this years is end of August

Had ours weekend just gone.

18 holes strokeplay on saturday, top 80 make the cut. 18 holes on sunday. Made the cut after playing terrible so was pretty happy, ended up coming 57th.

Thats the only way ive known it to be.
