What's important when you play?

After being away from the game for a very long time Im just happy to be out playing.

I know at this stage Im making silly mistakes all over the place, Im just trying to find some consistency.

For me it is playing well enough so that it is enjoyable - i.e keeping it in play and not throwing away shots off the tee or duffs.

In competitions, scoring well is important as I know I can play a lot better than my handicap, and should be.

For any type of game, the social side is important during and after the game.

• Getting to play even if scoring poorly (I just love being out there!)
• Companions/Craic (nothing worse than spending hours with someone you dislike!)
• Playing well (it's very satisfying, when it happens!)
• Scoring well (you don't need to play well to score, but it helps!)
• Winning (I'm a bit too competitive at times!)
• H/Cap cut (Means a lot to me at the minute to get down more #YOTF)
• Course condition (As long as it doesn't affect the golf too much, I'll play anywhere)
• Post round socialising (Love a good drink and some fun stories afterwards)
• Pace of play (Not a biggy if the golf is OK and the company is good)
• Weather (Again, I'm no fair weather golfer, but with good company, who cares!)

Considering all the slow play threads recently, and the OP put pace of play as an option, it's not high on peoples order of preference? Strange!

There's too many other variable in conjunction with it, if the company is not good and you're waiting on tee and approach shots, it would be painful and have a greater effect on me, if the craic is good anyway and were having some banter between shots and it's slow but moving along although at a stutter, then no biggy, it's all a state of mind IMO!

Not unexpected though, the R&A survey from about a year ago said similar (looks like that project is proceeding at pace too, I believe they have scheduled a meeting to discuss it!)

When other factors are good (i.e craic, scoring, conditions etc) then pace doesn't seem to matter a jot to most of us. It's only when things are going wrong we look for something to whinge about/blame and pace is an easy target

Good company.
A good course.
Enough golf balls to play 18 holes
I'll take whatever else comes along, although I like to hit a few decent shots and sink a long putt or two.

Company of playing partners
Scoring well. I never strike it well, but I can get it round, which is what golf is really about for me
Don't like faffing about, no game should take more than 3 hours
Decent course

Not bothered about winning

Nail on the head.

I find that if the company is good, i'll enjoy it no matter how bad or where I play. I only ever remember my good shots anyway

Have been out of golf for two weeks now with a pulled back, so just playing would be nice.
Getting better though so will soon be back in the swing of things.

Good company, good golf, good score, good weather.

Any of those would be welcome on their own, all four together make for memorable days.

It's not the be all and end all and I've certainly enjoyed plenty of rounds when I wasn't playing well but I don't remember ever failing to enjoy a round when I played well.

Had a shocker on Saturday score wise, just seemed to find trouble on every hole and felt gutted that I let myself down for the weekly game I’d looked forward to all week

I had one of those days where you seem to always be telling yourself off for stupid errors/decisions

So I missed a chance for a cut but realised sitting in bar afterwards that despite the 90 minute solo drive to get there (& the same back obviously) that I was still glad I played and it struck me that over everything I just wanted to be out there even if the score turns out to be poor

So what’s the priority/important to you about your golf. What order would you put these in? (just put your top & bottom 2 if you haven’t time to do all ten)

(in no particular order)
• Getting to play even if scoring poorly
• Playing well
• Scoring well
• Weather
• Course condition
• Pace of play
• Companions/Craic
• Winning
• H/Cap cut
• Post round socialising

The other priorities for me are the craic & course conditions followed by playing well

The things I attach least importance to are winning and the pace of play

You?

Companions. It's a lonely game on your Todd.

Spot on Brian. Perhaps old farts that have played for years look on their golf differently to whippersnappers.
