What would you have done please?

gotta agree with handicap..... If i had lost then 'found' my ball i would have conceded the hole. i wouldn't have asked that my partner replaces his ball...if i was asked as you were 3ofthetee, i would probably have done the same thing as you. I'm glad to see that you won it!!
I guess that the very fact you have posted this question, you feel you should have NOT have replaced your ball...?

Just to precis what I would have done:

I would not have allowed the match to continue under the circumstances if the hole was not conceded.

If there were no wager then I probably would have replaced my ball, and savour the element of gamesmanship as a challenge.

Appreciate All your comments either good or bad. Please be reassured that I am one of the most competitive people around having lost 1.5 shots from my handicap in 6 weeks, now 13.7. My opponent was 18 and has not beaten me this year.

However in normal circumstances I would have thought he was taking the proverbial and laughed it off. It was more important to him than me to win. Incidentally it did affect me as I lost both holes 4 and 5 with the worst 2 scores of the day. Both Double bogeys.

Away man, nothing to lighten up about. There is no honour in this whatsoever and how is it an acceptable compromise. So here is the quote “after 5 minutes he GAVE UP and told me to PICK up my ball” there is no compromise after that.

If this guy was a close mate then surely you can say “sod off the hole is mine MATE” in a light hearted way of course. Are we honestly suggesting some fall out would have ensued if he didn’t go with his mates own rules….surely not. :D

Tend to agree.

I'd have probably laughed when he suggested it and said something like 'yeah, unlucky mate, shame we can't do that, innit.'

But it must have bitten into you, just a smidge, or else you wouldn't have posted it.

I'd be inclined to show him this thread and jokingly let him know how lucky he was to be playing you, not some of the guys here, but in future you'd best be playing it to the rules, eh.

Just so he knows it ain't gonna happen again.

question, was he taking advantage or was/is he ignorant of the ruling?

if you suspect the latter then a generous birthday gift of a copy of the R&A rule book, with a ball marker at the appropriate page, should settle the matter.

Carpal. He knew the rules and was in the wrong

Mono is right. There is NO grey area here. He conceded the hole......end of story!

If you both wanted to play the hole out just for practice / the sake of it then fine, but the score should still stand and that is loss of hole.

Or just copied off vigs post which was the first contribution to the op.........

If he told you to pick up, he conceded the hole. End of.

You cannot then un-concede it

Mono's post:

End of he has conceded that is the matter finished.
