My playing partner and I played on Sunday morning. We were putting out on the 18th green when a bloke from behind, hit a shot to within 3 yards of the flag! Therefore nearly hitting us!

We like to play at a good pace, so there's no chance we were holding him up and even if we were playing slow, it doesn't give him the right to hit his approach shot whilst we're still on the green. Plus we completed our round in 3 hours, 20 mins which is exactly slow.
I've no idea where he came from as we had two 4 balls behind us the last time we looked.

My playing partner decided to pick the ball up, put it in his pocket and walk off with it. (Pro V1 by all accounts).

We've had instances before when people have hit balls towards us (as have other members) and it has been reported to the club but no action is ever taken.

The bloke who hit the ball at us, came over to me as I was getting into my car and asked if I had seen his ball as it should have been on the green. I replied 'So you hit a ball at us while we were putting?'. He didn't reply but he was clearly angry.

Admittedly, I don't play at a very respectable golf club but it still cost £900 a year in membership. The course is good but the members are often a 'bit thick'.

What would you have done in that position?

Put simply. I'd have had words. If someone hits one in your direction accidentally fair enough, but on same hole to hit in to a green when people are putting out is unacceptable.

I take it he wasn't playing from over a hill or round a dogleg and may not have known you were there?

Left the ball where it was. Waited for the owner to come and claim it. Then stepped up and had a chat about it and aired my opinion. If we disagreed then ensure there are no witnesses to see what would happen next.

I wouldn't walk off with the ball....

If you wanted a discussion just wait by the side of the green as he approaches, and give him a chance to explain himself.

he must of been able to see you pretty vlearly, if he could see you in the car park, would of waved the ball in his face, then back in to the pocket

I like your 'style'........ha

But, I would defo have waited for the player to arrive at the green, and give piece of mind, taking his ball doesnt really help, or achieve anything................sure to do it again at some point

This!

I'd have left the ball there and waited. I assume the 19th looks onto the 18th and so there would be witnesses. Tell him he nearly hit you but do it calmly and without being threatening. Give him time to respond and see what he says. If he kicks off tell him there were witnesses who saw what happened and who are watching now. If he doesn't back down leave it and walk away. Either way put it in writing and complain. Sometimes it takes a bit of official action to make players at least aware of their actions although I doubt the club will do anything drastic and that he'll change

You haven't said if he was hitting a blind shot. I would have taken his ball. I would have had a quiet word in his ear. At the end of the day, it could have been a genuine mistake.

Didn't one of your earlier posts mention sticking a ball up the jacksies of some senior citizens?

i was discussing something like this on saturday, i would have lay down on the green with the ball in my mouth while waiting for him to turn up. i would let my playing partner pretend to give me CPR. then see what he says

You have in the past threatened to leave your club as you seem to regulary attract problems. I think if you are hell bent in staying we are going to get many more posts from you about problems. It could be a case of put up or shut up. I played your track a week ago, having a enjoyable knock and putting out on 9 when 3 mouthy chavs jumped in on 10. From very brief conversations they were just waiting for us to start having a moan and body language told me it would have kicked off. Ignored them and suffered the extra 45 mins for the last 9 and complained to pro shop.

I would have walked over to my bag pulled my driver and tee'd up adjacent to the green and sent it past him on his way down the fairway!.....

Id have stood behind Captainron while he was doing his thing. Trust me, when the "golfer" approaches and sees Cameron glowering at him and threatening him in his South African accent, I promise you he's going to apologise sharpish and avoid him like the plague every time he sees him..

On a more serious note, I would wait and have a chat. I can't imagine that veiled threats of violence would be the answer, but maybe some polite advice on the best place to have Pro V1's removed from internal body cavities might work...

I hit my shot when they were behind me, so no....you are completely wrong in your earlier post.

And yes it was an older person.
..........
And the person that hit the ball, had a clear view.

Seems to fit the bill.

I'd have left the ball where it was, putted out and stood waiting by the flag as he walked up to have a chat. I had it once before where I had a long approach and went to layup short but hit it too well and found the green, I waved my hand after the shot as an apology as I walked up and explained to the group that I was aiming to layup and didn't expect it to go that far... Dealt with calmly..

I would have written "knob" on it with an orange sharpie.....standard practice for anyone that sends one my way..............:ears:
