What will be the next breakthrough in golf?

I'm going to say a single flex shaft.

Made from a composite that adjusts according to applied swing speed. It would allow the "whippyness" required for slower swingers, but also the stiffness for faster swingers.

good call, and I don't think it's too far off

I don't see how that would help personally. There still wouldn't be any standards so every manufacturer would be different. All this would do is put more shafts on the market to confuse us consumers and we'd no doubt pay through the nose for it.

And having a white driver helps how exactly ;)

Nah I didn't say it would help, just a possible break through.

Yeah sorry, I went off topic there didn't I. You are probably right in that it will come sooner or later, I see a lot of issues if it does though.

think about it. the problem with the lack of standards is that you don't know how one Regular compares with another. with this - it doesn't matter, because you always get the flex you need.

now how to sort out high, middle and low kick.

As an Avid reader of Sci Fi and self confirmed Geek, I would like to see Golf courses that self repair, weather domes that allow all Year round Golf, integrated body chips that auto calculate handicaps and the bastard in front of me get a move on....

3D GPS. You'll be able to see realistic contours on greens and fairways, using the same tech as that new nintendo hand held console.

That is a very good call.

Would that be allowed though? I don't think GPS devices can show gradients, etc.

I think the next advancement will be in trolleys and their capabilities. We now have a trolley with a UBS port, I reckon we'll see trollies with a refridgerated compartment and other 'aids' to assist your round of golf.

Perhaps microchipped clubs so that they can be tracked if they're stolen?

A trolley with a nice comfortable seat, so you can relax whilst playing your 6 hour round. :(

You mean a buggy? :D

I think Nike might be onto something with the material construction of the golf ball core. The lighter resin in their 20XI ball sounds interesting. I wonder if following on from David Leadbetter golf there may be advancement in gaming consoles and controllers to allow people the chance to improve their swing/play a more realistic round at home.

Wash your mouth out i am not that old !! Just need an attachment to the trolley to sit on, whilst i watch my partners pre shot routines. ;)

Anything else? :D

Yeah but you don't do you cause without standards you won't always get the same flex for the same swing speed. A fujikura shaft will flex differently for a 90mph swing than an aldila one will so you still might have the wrong shaft.

A dog roll with a decent sausage in it.
So many golf courses now serve up crap dog rolls at the halfway house.
I would love a nice crispy roll with a beautiful meaty banger slid inside, some fried onions and a little dribble of ketchup.
When they get that right, they've cracked it

Torque reactive (or single flex) shafts could be the way forward, can't see 3G gps taking off as r and a state no gradient measuring devices.

I'd personally like to see smart phone gps systems become allowed if nothing more than to save me £200 smackers

I'm saying Hi-definition cameras throughout the course, along side laser pointers.

The will scan your set up, and record your swing, they will follow the ball and laser pointers will indicate it's precise resting point so the ball can never be lost.
You will no longer need to keep score as the AI software will analyse it for you, it will also tell you exactly what clubs you used, the flaws in your setup and swing.
you will be followed round the course by robotic caddies, that are part of the hi-def recording as well as carrying your clubs. Which will record club face and impact of every swing/putt.

You wanna play West Surrey Smiffy. They've got the best half way hut I've ever seen. It's run, or at least was a couple of years ago by a French Chef. You could get just about anything you wanted in there. The steak roll was awesome. He even had an alcohol license I think.

adjustable putters?

I think advancements in materials will be the next. In balls, shafts, heads and inserts etc. Material science is always moving forward and a scary pace.

Looking further into the future I would also think that electronic scoring and stats will come in for some places, maybe a long drive hole, nearest the pin etc.
