Good evening folks,

After recently taking up the sport and making my way onto the local municipal to play 'find the ball in the woods' I've booked my first ever golf lesson, as a very new player with no experience what should I expect from this first lesson?

I'm somewhat apprehensive due to potentially being dangerous when in charge of a golf club but I'm rather keen on getting to the standard whereby I can somewhat choose where the ball goes.

Any tips or pointers in preparation for mondays lesson would be greatly accepted.

Thanks

I'd suggest just turn up and see what the pro suggests. I guess he'll get you to just hit some 7 irons and see what your swings doing, then he'll check, grip, posture, ball position, swing characteristics and maybe change one or two things

Good luck -post up how it goes!

Welcome to the game!!!

My tip would be don't be apprehensive. The pro will have seen it all before. You will probably work on fundamentals, grip, stance, posture etc. Just relax and enjoy it.

Have an open mind. Be honest with the pro about where you are at and what you would like out of the lesson.

Don't be intimidated by the lesson. The pro is working for you. Enjoy, it should help you.

Trust what your pro tells you.

They will have seen it all before, while sometimes it may seem wrong they are telling you to make you better.

Getting the basics right and giving you a couple of drills to work on.. It will feel different and uncomfortable, but be patient as it will get worse before it gets better, so don't revert back to your old ways and stay with it.

Why are you having the lesson?
What part of your game do you want to improve?
Contact?
Direction?
Consistency?
Driving?
Long game?
Short game?
Bunkers?
Putting?
General swing?

How often do you play/practice?
How good do you want to be?

Just some of the questions he should ask you.
Above all, be honest with you replies
If there's anything you don't understand, dont be scared to ask.
Get there early and get warmed up before the lesson starts

Thank you very much for your replies. I've booked a lesson followed by a round so hopefully I can implement some of the things he says straight away.

From playing a couple of rounds and hitting a good few balls at the driving range I seem to struggle with a lot of things, mainly;

Consistent contact and direction. 1 out of 10 goes the way I want it to the dispersion of the rest is sporadic (that may be an understatement)

I seem to have a rather consistent slice with a driver, ball distance is good but they start on the target line but travel high and right each time.

I'm much more confident closer to the hole and my putting so far hasn't been too bad

Thank you all for your replies it's greatly appreciated.

Quite a bit to fix then.
Don't try and fix everything at once, the pro isn't a magician.
And don't expect miracles when you play after your lesson

Agreed, I know my base game now is a starting point and a good few lessons should point me in a much better direction.

At the moment it's a case of all the gear no idea.

It shouldn't be the course your headed for but the practice area, if I have a lesson I would almost never play straight after but always work on whatever it was we were changing. Only reason I would play is if I was playing in a comp but not likely as I'd never book a lesson for before it. Head to the practice area and get comfortable with what your doing so you can take that to the course, your wasting your time and money if you think you can have a lesson adjust walk on to the course and be instantaneously better at whatever. Alot of the time it takes practice and a bit of patience to drill it in. Just a bit of friendly advice. Cheers

Iv done a run of lessons recently, after the first lesson I changed my grip to more neutral one, I stupidly played the next day and was struggling not to go back to my old grip

Welcome to golf. Be honest with the pro about what you've done before and your level of play. He'd have seen it all before so don't be embarrassed. If you have a lot of issues, be patient, and more importantly make sure you work on the drills and fixes you're given. Many turn up for a lesson, get shown a fix and then rock up the following weekend expecting it to be in their game, having not hit any balls or worked on the feeling and changes, and they then wonder why it's not working

Thank you. I've got my clubs in the car, alarm
on, feeling rather excited to set out on the ever long journey of improvement.

And didn't kill anyone on the course today.

You gentlemen were absolutely right, the pro did everything to alleviate my pre lesson worries. Started off with a few stretches and a coffee, discussed what my good and bad shots looked like and how often I played.

Went on his GC2 to look at some short game and corrected a few face to path issues I was having, went through a variety of shots with different clubs and then out for 6 holes with his supervision and some on course adjustments, which was brilliant.

Back in for a break and then I went for a round with a friend before a spot of lunch and a check back in with the pro to discuss how my day had been.

All in all a great day out, next lesson already booked for later this week

Brilliant and now you've had the first one there's no need to be so worried. Now comes the hard part and you have to really work at the changes you've been shown to make them feel natural in the swing. If you struggle or it starts going poorly contact the pro and ask for more help.
