What Is The Point?

Doesn't it narrow down the area where you are playing 2nd shots from and so leave a big ugly concentrated patch of divots??

I mean, say you fairway is 20yds wide (Good shot to hit it btw! ;)) the divots will be spread over a wide area. When you take you ball just off the fairway you'll all be hitting from similar places?? Doesn't it make a mess of that area??

What do the greenkeepers do come Spring, overseed that semi rough or re turf it??

As horrible as mats are, I can understand that idea.

Well rough is supposed to be penal so it dosnt matter as much as it be seeded and while it takes the grass round it will have thatched over it from above. Fairways are more noticeable when scarred.

My club is operating a preferred lie system at the moment where if your ball is on the fairway, you can place the ball within six inches of where it lies.

Yea a lot of clubs do that at the moment, but wait until t get snowy/sodden/muddy delete as appropriate, you will end up being more restricted, lift clean and cheat is only the start of the winter! ;)

I still don't quite understand everyones resistance to mats... You get a nice lie for every shot, can get silly amounts of spin on chips and you leave the fairway in tip-top condition for the spring/summer.

fom end of this month we have to use a mat or tee up....even in the rough!! thats usually the point where the clubs go in the garage til march.

Teeing it up makes even less sense?? Are there no divots on the par 3 tees??

Saying that, teeing it up will help you go for the par 5 greens from around 250yds (300yds+ for the 20 h'cappers  :D

your right it makes no sense at all! i wouldnt mind but the fairways have been less than perfect even with this measure in place. for me i dont mind playing from the semi but teeing up in the rough is too far.

Hit it down the middle then have to play it from off the fairway? That sounds like utter madness to me :)

Golf is great, you learn something new every day :)

I quite often play the opposite of that, hit it into the clag then kick it back on the fairway. :D
