what is the golf industries fasination with offset putters?

Re: what is the golf industries fascination with offset putters?

I once cut an old Ping Anser putter down from 35" to 31". The swing weight went down from D2 to A0, checked on my club pro's swing weighting machine. It then felt so light that it was almost unusable, even with quite a lot of lead tape stuck on the head!

You cut 4" off. Cut 1" off and you will notice no difference

If you take that much off of course you'll notice a difference!

I used to follow this "cutting down a putter alters the swingweight" bla bla bla...

But I like to challenge things....

So I held in my hand a two inch piece of off-cut from the top of a shaft....

Seriously, it's light as a feather, anyone who says it makes a difference is talking out their posterior. Nobody could notice the difference in weight between a 33 or 35 inch putter.

All this swingweight and balance BS is just industry talk, seriously who is THAT good to notice a gramme or two?

I'm no expert but I see it differently. .. If you were to balance just the shaft and cut two inches off the butt end and try balancing the shaft at the same fulcrum point the club end would be heavier...... Now imagine the club balanced and cut 2 inches off the shaft and replace the grip. The grip weight has now shifted towards the fulcrum point making the butt end heavier. Hence the club end now becomes lighter.

I am happy for an expert to shoot me down but that is how my schoolboy physics sees it

You are 100% correct.

However my purely personal, unscientific, point of view is, I don't think anyone can actually notice any difference due to the fact that the weight of the two inches cut off is so minimal.

Well I can't, but of course some people may be able to, each to their own.

The weight of 2" of shaft is pretty minimal. It's the reduction of the length of the lever arm that is much more significant. Swing weight is a measure of how heavy the club feels to swing, not its actual weight. If you fit a heavy grip or a counterbalance weight, you will reduce the swing weight of the putter, despite the fact that overall it now weighs more.

Just to add that the Ping putter I cut down from 35 to 31 inches then felt impossibly light and twitchy. The principal of counterbalanced putters such as the Odyssey Tank series is that you have a heavy head, but counterbalance this with a heavy grip and added weight at the butt end. Thus you get a heavy putter with a reasonable amount of inertia (difficult to twitch) whilst maintaining a normal swing weight. :)

Do you think that was a contributing factor to your yips, or was that already an issue when you cut your putter down?

No, I already had them by then. I was experimenting to see if a shorter putter helped. What might have caused them was using a putter for many years that was rather too long for me. Same Ping Anser putter btw.

Did the shorter length help at all?

Why would the longer putter cause them? An unnatural backswing and follow through perhaps?

I now putt with a 33" Odyssey Works No 7 putter fitted with Super Stroke 1.3" grip, which is definitely better. Putters that are too long mean that you have to putt with rather bent elbows, which is a bit awkward and doesn't help you to make a smooth stroke

Doesn't have to be textbook to work

Awkward? no way man.

What has this got to so with offset on putters?

Still waiting to hear why it is so popular. from what I can gather from reading up on this. It says right eye dominant people may benefit from some offset. That leaves quite a large percentage of golfers not really catered for or at worst, left to their own devices.

Just as I was thinking about this, big Steven buzz from YouTube fame has got himself custom fit for a putter from an American company Edel. He was fit for no offset as it was making him misalign.

Here is the video for those interested.
