What is it with some people?

As a new golfer its people like them that scare you away from the course, some people are just compete mugs and think golf is just for them.

It's not a case of being a "mug", they are just trying to protect the sport they love and stick to the rules but common sense needs to prevail in times like this, unfortunately this lady appears to lack any common courtesy or common sense.

You should have said, "Do you know what 'golf' stands for?" That would have really ticked her off!

Honestly, I don't know why people do it, I can understand if the course was busy, but when it's dead.....stop being a pompous idiot. People like her are the reason so many people don't bother signing up at clubs or taking up the sport all together.

My club doesn't have a "no practising on the course" rule and the pro openly encourages people to play 2 or 3 balls especially inside 100 yards, obviously only when the course is empty. If they kicked people off for doing such a thing I'd have been kicked off within 10 minutes of signing up as a member!

The thing is when I got to the 10th the pro was still there, I hit my tee shot and he thought I was getting a bit steep so he told me to change something and to hit another ball - so he clearly isn't bothered.

Don't you love it when Pro's give out free advice! I'm of the mind set that if the pro is happy with my exploits on the golf course then I'll continue as I am, and I play quite regularly with him, heck, he even sticks down 2 or 3 balls and has a practise!

i openly break this rule all the time. i care for my course, replace divots and fix more pitch marks than i make when i get to the green. bull**** rule. im not even sure its enforced at my place. chipped around the 18th yesterday while waiting for my buddy. not a peep said.

I just spent £1300 quid on clubs from him so the least he can do is ensure I'm playing well with them :)

Only playing devils advocate here, but I have played courses where I have seen folk play 2-3 balls into the green and then walking to the green, putting and the walking off. They did not repair any pitchmarks at all.
Now not saying that anyone here would ever do that, but there are a lot of people that do, and one thing I hate more than interfering people is putting on greens full of pitchmarks.

Edited: Appreciate that you were only chipping, but I was just generalising.

And that's where common sense comes in on the other side, if you play 2 or 3 balls into the green then repair the marks made. I, like Garyinderry, seem to play one ball into a green and end up repairing 3 or 4 pitch marks. It's my club as much as the next blokes (unless he's the owner of course) and I want to play it in good condition all of the time. However, just chipping onto the green like the OP says he was doing, isn't going to cause any marks at all.

But playing devil's advocate' advocate what is worse, me hitting 3balls into the green and repairing all the pitch marks or a 3ball playing 1 ball each and not repairing any?

I agree, but it only takes 2 or 3 people playing from 80+ yards and not being courteous to make people argue the other way.

Not repairing pitchmarks is terrible habit that a lot of people seem to have. I re-iterate that I have no issue with what you were doing!!

I'll always pull my playing partners up on divots and pitch marks, I'll even throw the divot at them to prompt them to replace it. Always got a pitch mark repair tool in my pocket while playing so anyone who plays with me knows all they have to do is ask to borrow it.

Maybe clubs should ditch the no practising on the course rule and tighten up on people getting sloppy with regards to repairing divots and pitch marks, if caught then they get a 2 day ban from the course or something like that.

When I worked at Chartham Park we used to have a charity jar behind the bar, anyone caught not replacing a divot, repairing a pitch mark, swearing on the course, untucked shirt, hat or spikes in the club house etc was fined £1.......I used to love fining random people who came in the bar with spikes on....I was only the barman but took great pleasure in taking their £1 coin, and then pointing at the huge "NO SPIKES" sign.

This^!!

I really hope you walked away without saying a word but my guess is you were reasonable with her?

I treat the course as if it were mine, if everyone does the same it will always look good, no matter how many balls you play.

Having seen the state of Hawkeyes short game he needs the practice. Strictly speaking the club does have a no practice rule but I've seen + handicappers doing it and the pro and so its pot luck who sees you and whether they say anything. If it was just chipping around the green is it really going to make that much difference.

I'll make sure there is a note to the committee and the captain outlining my sock and horror at such a frontage the rules and regulations of our club and demand suitable punishment is meted out post haste

Last summer late on I saw a couple of members practicing on our tenth green, putting and a few bunker shots. Did I complain no, I thought bloody good idea that as our practice bunker is pants!

As far as I'm aware our course has no issues with 1 person playing 2 balls but not playing 3 or 4 at a time.

I really can't go people that do this. It's as if they are watching and waiting for someone to step out of line?

Don't know if we have this rule - I don't think so.
When I'm playing solo, I'll often tee off twice, especially if the first one wasn't right.
And I'll quite often play the 2nd shots too.
and the 3rd.
Sometimes if it's a tricky one I'll hit 4 or 5 until I get it right jsut to practice it.
I always replace any divots and repair any pitchmarks so it's no different to a group/Society playing.

Mind you, Mike, - you were breaking the rules........

Maybe you should be flogged within an inch of your life then given a rub down with a damp copy of the Radio Times as punishment for this heinous act.

The 'No practising on the Course' rule is nothing to do with how busy the course is, its about wear & tear on the course, so strictly speaking, you were out of order.
However, I think 'most' clubs/Pro's members turn a blind eye if its done right, and you're clearly not damaging anything.
BUT, I have seen spots on fairways where clearly someone has hit 6/7 shots to a green and left it in a right mess, which is what the rule is for surely ?

I would say that if there is a club rule saying no practice on the course then she was correct. The rule must have been made to overcome a problem. If not and it does not interfere with others play then she was wrong.

So what is playing on your own if it isn't practicing?

If you ask me, those of us who go out on our own to practice are more likely to replace divots and pitch marks than those who moan about us practicing. I really don't see how me hitting three balls from different yardages, which I have done in the past, would do any more damage than a 3 ball.
