The term "Tee Box" is used a lot & it amuses me that most folks aren't old enough to understand where it came from. In the old days, before my time (just), & before the advent of wooden tees players used to tee up on a little pile of sand. This sand was kept in a box on the tee. At my course the boxes were made of cast iron & were about 1 foot square & 9 inches deep. The hole number, par & stroke indices were stencilled on the side of the box. These were still used as tee markers & rubbish bins until quite recently & I was sorry to see them go. Nobody at the club is old enough to remember exactly when they were introduced but they must surely have been the oldest items of hardware on the course. Not sure how many balloons the greenkeeper got from the rag & bone man when they were disposed of.

We had these on our 'daily play' blue tees until lockdown. The 'sand' box function had long since been replaced by 'rubbish bin' box for golfers (and 'dog poo bag' box for walkers). Since the covid re-opening and the dictat that all rubbish bins should be removed we have cute new tee marker resplendent with our logo. Nice enough but a bit of tradition has gone by the wayside.

I genuinely thought people called it a tee box because the raised rectangular grass mound the tees are on is like a 'box' if you know what I mean. Haha.

We still have (until lockdown) 'tee boxes' (often called 'sand boxes') on our par 3s for divot hole repairs. I have noticed that some clubs now have 'tee cups' for the collection of broken tees. They seem to be used rarely.

I think the modern trend of calling the general raised ground where Teeing Areas are located, 'tee boxes' very confusing when many call a teeing area a tee box.
IMO the colloquial Tee is where you start from and is sufficient. How many say 'You'll gave to go back to the teeing area and play another'?

You place the ball on a tee peg or peg.

Just rambling
