I'm not really a golf club nerd (my irons cost £40 from a second hand store :D) so what irons would you recommend to a scratch golfer?

thanks in adv....

Shouldnt this be in the ask the experts section? I doubt any normal golfer can sort you out without knowing your game.

Or even better, go ask your local pro.

Do you have regular coaching at the moment? If yes, what have you specifically been working on?
What do you consider to be the strengths of your game?
Weaknesses?
How often do you play/practise?
What is your scoring average/handicap?
Do you keep stats?
What is your strike/shot/shape pattern for the following clubs
Driver/Tee shots
Fariway woods
Rescue Clubs
Long/medium irons
Short irons

What do you want from your clubs? How do you hit it? Low or high baller? Do you like to move the ball around or are you a straight ball hitter? What shafts do you play? The shaft is the most important thing, but at your level it is DEFINITELY worth getting custom fitted, and I mean by a proper fitter who has a decent trackman or vector system, access to LOTS of head and shaft combo's and allows you to hit the ball from grass.

Where are you?

so, once he answers all of these questions, are you going ot recommend something to him?

Is this thread a wind up? Surely any scratch golfer knows what irons he needs?

He hasnt got a clue slugger, hes just copy and pasted this from the ask the experts section.
I doubt it will make any difference on any decidion he does or does not take. If it is a genuine question, he will probably head into a golf shop and end up with whatever takes his fancy.

Any at all!!

A scratch golfer should be able to pick up any sticks and turn in a good score with them ;)

heh.. I can hit most of them :p

If you see what I'm using right now you'd laugh out loud...even I laugh when I look at them :D

I used to have Ram Tour Grind Blades but sold them when I quit. I'd hardly say Ram are a leading force in golf so I needn't bother with those again. I don't know much about who's currently making a good bladed club, Mizuno used to be talked about quite a lot but you don't hear much from them nowadays either :D

Just wondering what people would recommend given the choice..

Mono... I shall check out your 'porn' :p :p

I'd recommend:

A cast club head, probably with a large cavity back, and big offset.

Or, a forged head, bladed, with very little offset.

Or, something in between.

Does that help?

If you want blades I think Mizuno, Titleist & Nike make good ones.

Also the Callaway X prototype looks very sexy

Did you get out of the wrong side of bed this morning?

Of course it's a genuine question...I couldn't even NAME a set of blades right now :D

What does Tiger play with, Ernie, Harrington..... I wouldn't know... What's the latest 'trend'?

If you're looking for off the shelf blades then either Mizuno or...Mizuno! Actually, Nike do make some bee-a-utiful blades too. Personally, I'd play Mizuno blades over any other OEM because the forging and feel are excellent.

I wouldn't recommend anything to do with golf to a scratch player.
Anyway, you've made 200+ posts on here and I assume you read at least one of the magazines - have you really no idea? Sounds strange to me. A scratch golfer really ought to know what they want.....

I'd say I can hit most shots and shapes, although a draw is my default swing. I wouldn't say I was either high or low.
I don't know what shafts are in my irons.. they are in the car. I never looked. Seriously they were £40.

I was thinking about projectX 6.5 shafts as a friend has the 6.0 in his Callaways and I flush them quite nicely even though they feel a fraction whippy.

I'm in Sussex (near Gatwick) I think the custom fit for shaft flex makes perfectly good sense <thumb up>.

I gave up playing for 7 years, been back for 1 year now.. playing with £40 second hand clubs. I haven't really paid much attention to the pro shop as I've been playing and practicing with what I have, and that's about all there is to it. I'm not a complicated person... even the driver I hit I couldn't tell you what it is apart from my friend gave it to me, and it's a Titleist. I couldn't tell you what shaft is in it but I hit it not too bad :p

Bizzarly I actually follow KeefG's philosophy of 'you should be able to hit anything if you are good'. I can, but now I think I need some better tools... simples.

JOUK.

I'm slightly confused by your OP.

You post some incredible stuff on here, especially the technical pieces in the ask the expert section. And in all probability you come across as someone who would appear to know the game very well. So I'm a little confused that you'd need to ask about a set of clubs.

Not a critisism, just an observation.
